Can I use a digital multimeter test a battery, and alternator voltage?

I've got a digital multimeter. Can I test the battery voltage and the voltage the alternator is putting out while the engine is running? Do I just probe the red and black cables to the battery terminals while it's not running to check the battery and while it's running to check the alternator voltage? On that 76 Datsun B210, I have a problem with the CHG and BRAKE light coming on randomly after a fuse for the Automatic choke blows. The Charging system quits working and the BRAKE light and CHG light pop up on the dash, but haven't experienced any brake problems when it happens. I just know when it happens the Charging system quits working and it then runs just off the battery. According to the fuse panel cover it's the Auto Choke fuse 10 AMP, but it also shows a line connected with the Meter, Turn Signal, Flashers. On the line that drawn on the fuse cover the word IGNITION is above it. I guess meaning it's tied in with the ignition. I've looked the factory wiring diagram and can't see a relation to BRAKE fail indicator switch and can't even see a circuit for the CHG light in relation to that fuse that keeps blowing.

Yes

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.
