I'm getting ready to replace my front timing cover for my 1972 318 because it has no timing marks. Lot of work, but how else can I check the timing? Is this necessary or have I missed something basic? I'm new to working on cars so any info is appreciated!

I know there may be other posts address so please point them out, thanks!!!

You are looking on the drivers side of the vehicle correct?
This would be a good time to replace the timing chain.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

It is on the driver side just under the water pump. Mine is cast into the timing cover. There is now way for it to be missing unless a timing cover is different from 72 - 74. Make sure its not just caked up with sludge. Sometimes its easier to find when your shooting the timing light at it. I'll try to post you a picture but I didn't bring my camera home tonight.

I took this with my phone camera. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the response everyone!! I've looked over & over again but I can't find the marks or the tab that you see on the replacement cover. I'll look again & figure on replacing the cover; the timing chain as well! Again, thanks to everyone

Have you considered setting the motor to TDC (compression stroke) on #1 and make your own timing mark? I'll bet you could get it close.  :shruggy:

I'm not sure how to do that...I may just replace the cover & timing chain. I got a new petronix ignitor kit, coil, & wires so I want to make sure it's timed properly. Maybe a link as to who I would make my own marks would help. Thanks again for the help!
