68 charger bullit car

I have a friend who's father was a soundman on the bullit movie with Steve Mcqueen and the famous 4 speed RT charger.  My question is did anybody hear that one of the cars used was really a hemi 4 speed and not a 440?

In an interview Steve McQueen did with Motor Trend, he stated that the Charger (singular) was a Hemi.  I can't recall if he mentioned a transmission type.  I've asked about this a bunch of times and the common speculation I've gotten is that Steve, being a big Ford fan and being a little embarassed at the Mustang's preformance, made up the story about a Hemi Charger.
I forget which issue but it wouldn't be hard to find out.

"Warner Brothers purchased two four-speed Dodge Chargers... "at a Chrysler dealership in Glendale California," recalls Ron Riner. He also said the Dodge Chargers had to be purchased without promotional consideration, but after the success of the movie and the increase in Charger sales, Chrysler was more than willing to be generous with their vehicles to Warner Brothers for future projects. Mr. Riner posed an interesting premise: "did you realize that there wouldn't be an 01 car (the General Lee in Dukes of Hazzard) if we hadn't done BULLITT and Dodge hadn't sold so many Chargers?"

As a footnote, I'm pretty sure that in the same McQueen interview, he also stated the Mustang was bone stock, which we now know is also incorrect.  I'll have to try and locate it,  Steve's version makes for an interesting read.

the part of that interview i liked was when he said they had to handicap the charger by putting the skinniest tire they could find on so the mustang could keep up...   that's a great quote!

In an interveiw with Ben Jones from the "Dukes of Hazzard" T.V. series, he said that the General Lee sounded like a four speed in alot of the chase scenes because they used the sound track from  the Bullit Charger chase scene.

Correction: the guy who owns the 70 daytona (aka Jerry Jueneman) does own a 68 Charger with a 383 and a 4 spd which is painted black. BUT!

It is NOT the 68 Charger from the movie Bullitt!  It started life as a Gold car with a Black vinyl roof, Jerry painted it black.  I saw this very car when it was in mid-repair stage.

Apparently one of the Bullitt cars was originally blue as well which I can't see why as they could have quite easily got 2 black ones, also you see Hickman change gear a few times so one of them is definitely a 4 speed

2 cars were purchased

1 blue, 1 black

1 4 speed, 1 auto

The Auto car was blue, then painted black, this car was destroyed in the fire.

The burnt car went to a junk yard off of 3rd, the survivor was purchased by a filmcrew member.

The picture company was going to jump the car off of the golden gate, mayors office rejected the request hence the reason why one auto was purchased.   They were going to set the throttle and launch it off the bridge.

yeah, that was pretty lamo. 
That 68 was the special version that was able to reproduce hubcaps when one would fall off i noticed.   

So was the ending in DMCL, IMHO.  DMCL  has to be the worst acting I have just about ever seen.  But, I took the movie for what it was worth and of course loved the Charger and i'm sure i'll watch it again at some point.  That's why we own the movie anyways, right.

Yeah, I hear in Bullit that the Crash did not go as Planed. Was suppose to hit some Gas Station Pumps but missed, They had the Pyrotechics go off anyways. They only had one chance to get it right & what ever they got they used, Even if it do not go so well or as planed.  LEON.

That was a very nice car in Bullitt.  I watched the special features on the second DVD that came in the package but sadly no real useful information to share, although Paul Genge(shooter) and Bill Hickman(stunt driver and he doubled for Gene Hackman in various stunts too)) were just too cool in that movie.

Maybe I missed it, but does anyone know where the heck the surviving car is now? Also, did the burnt car end up getting turned into a couple thousand Honda's, or did someone save parts of it?

.... so sorry....  I see that the burnt car went to the scrap yard.... just thought maybe there were some parts salvaged by the crew or the yard .... like the Christine cars.... As for the other car, I didn't see a real answer.... So please ENLIGHTEN ME!!!!
