Im not real familiar with rear axles yet and the chart I have shows them being a little different shape.  Judging by the other options though, and the bolt pattern.  Id say they are both 8 1/4..  just looking to confirm that.   Im going to swap my 400 for a 440 so I probably want at least an 8 3/4, correct?

The first is from a 73 SE 318 car, the second from a 73 400 car.

8 3/4 is definitely the way to go or even a dana 60(if you are buiding a real heavy hitter)

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks that helps quite a bit.  Is it normal for a 400 car to have a 8 1/4?

by reading that article, i'm guessing 8 1/4 was common and maybe an option of the 8 3/4??

someone will chime in on this one..... Nacho??Andy??and a few other 3rd gen gurus out there.

400 2 bbl cars can be offered with an 8 1/4.  I believe it was the standard axle for the 2bbl version, and a 8 3/4 being an option.
67 Plymouth Barracuda, 69 Plymouth Barracuda, 73 Charger SE, 75 D100, 80 Sno-Commander

Daytona R/T SE

I generally keep a couple 8 1/4's lying around-I just used my last loose one up this past wednesday-I bolted it up under the ass end of a car I'm stripping, just so I can keep it rolling so it'll be easier to load when I haul it to the crusher ::)

8 1/4's are fine if you have a stock 318 car...I've even ran one behind a 440 for awhile and it didn't break, but mostly to me,  they're junk :yesnod:

My 383 2V car came with a 2.45 geared 8 1/4.

my 72 w/a 400 has an 8 1/4
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

yep,my 72 se had an 8 1/4,and it was originally a 400 2 barrel-i drove it with the 440 and beat the crap out of it for about 6000 miles before it started making noises! if your on a budget and dont let it hook up youll be okay for a while, traction is what hurt mine.also do your self a favor when you do decide to swap, change rear springs at the same time, the added weight of the rear end and the extra abuse you can dish at it will probably wipe out your old springs anyway!!
