i have a 8 1/4 rear that desperately needs new gears and sure grip. i have the dana trac lock, 4.10 gears, bearing kit, lucas differential lube....and im short on money so i cant pay to get it all installed. i was told its a tough job and if done wrong will grind and not last long. how tough of a job is it? and how long does it typically take?

It isn't really all that tough but it does take some specialized tools and a a lot of patience to do it right.  If you have a manual and some mechanical ability and it's your first time, expect to have the car down for the better part of a day.
Truthfully, you might be happier saving the money and getting a pro to install it but I've been where you are and that's how you learn to do this stuff.

Not being real familiar with the 8 1/4, I'll guess the usual ones being a pinion depth setting guage, dial indicator, and a big ass torque wrench for the yoke.  There may be others but those are the most common unusual ones for rearend work.  Check Randy's Ring and Pinion website.  I think they'll tell you on there what you need.

I do not set up my own gears , you will need special tools to do it right & it will be cheaper to pay someone who has the tools

You will need miller special tool c-4084 and c-3715 to set the pinion depth.  these pinions have a crush sleve and if you do it wrong you will have to buy another one.  I have the chrysler master tech reference book that shows the procedure if you have any questions.
Thats how I roll.
