Am I a jerk?

Well, I have a friend that was looking for a 318 for one of his project cars and I happened to have one that I wasn't using so I sold it to him. I gave him a 1969 318 out of a Charger with a 4bbl supread bore intake, headers, and a 904 trans. I have never ran any of it and picked it  up a few years back. I didn't pay anything for it, but I had to $100 gas into it to pick it up. The motor is missing the starter, alt,and carb. I sold it to him for $150.00 and I helped him move it from my house to his house. He gave me $50.00 down and said he would pay me when he could, and thats no big deal. Anyways he calls me today saying how his uncle told him he got ripped off, and he seemed like he was hinting like he agreed. I thought I was giving him a hell of a good deal for $150.00!!!! I priced a junkyard 904 and it was $200! What do you guys think? How much would you have charged him? and am I a jerk?

You have got to be kidding!!!!  No. You are not by any means a jerk.. Call any junk yard anywhere and ask them what they charge just for a 318" core and a 904 core. Here in Florida you will not put your hands on a 318" for less than $200.00 904 cores are around $75.00 and you will need to repair or replace the pan and maybe the valve body as they poke a hole in it with a large bar and hammer to empty it out.

Better yet, tell HIM to call any bone yard......

Even here in Canada you can't find a rebuildable 318 for less that $200 let alone $300!

Your so called buddy has balls. Take the motor back and sell it to someone who really needs it for more money or the same price for that matter. Or give it away for spite. I hate asses like him. I've dealt with many people like that myself. After you take the motor back, bid him good ridens' jerk off!
He was never a true friend from the get go at this point from what your telling us.

Sounds like he hasn't the brains to understand what the value is of the parts you sold to him.
Get the engine and parts back...post haste.
When he asks for his money back.....just tell him what you think of him, his uncle, and the deal.
Then walk away.
Keep the $50 for the inconvienience.

  I can get 318 and 904 trans in local junkyards for right around $200. However, that is with me pulling them out. In the past, I`ve sold running 318/904 combos for $300-$350.You selling them to him for$150 was a decent deal for him.

Your friend is the jerk here.  You should go hand him the $50 and pick up your motor.  Sorry he will not get a better deal anywhere else.  Apprently he thinks he can.  Sorry I would go pick it up then listen to him whine when he finds out how much they do go for.

If he only had $50 any way he's not going to find another drivetrain - especially not delivered to his house! Just for spite I'd take it back and give it to some teenager who's actually trying to build a car on a budget (free or for the same $50 since you're not likely to get the rest of the money now that he's convinced you ripped him off).

Yeah, but I hate doing someone a favor and then getting treated like I screwed them. I'd rather help out someone who really needs it and who I know will appreciate it. Sadly, I learned (multiple times) not to make deals with friends/relatives - even if it's in writing and paid up front. Most of the time it's better to give it to a total stranger. Ever given something to someone for free and still have them complain about it? That's gratitude for ya...

Maybe I'm a jerk? I think that spoiled/ungrateful people deserve to know when they are acting like it. How can you be called a jerk for pointing out that another is being rude?
