hey guys! I am looking for a carb and was wondering what you thought!?! I am building a 500hp 440, W/ 727. I will be doing mostly street, some trips, and a little track. What would you get? I was looking at the Carter... I mean that Edelbrock AVS 800 cfm. What do you guys think of that carb. What works the best? What would you do? Thanks, Zack.

One of the Holley's at or above 750 cfm would be the best choice, for the sake of ultimate adjustability and tuning...

850-950 Holley , probably an HP series ,no Edddys on my cars

Ghoste

The Eddys are perfect for an all around daily driver type of performance car but if you are trying to maximize output, you have to get a Holley.

Budget?

Any of the HP-style Holley types will work well.  I went for the Pro-form 850 for my set-up...all the adjustability of a 4150HP for about a $100 less.

For the use your describing, a Thermoquad is going to be by far the best choice. You can easily make your power goal and get far, far better gas millage and drivability than any Holly, for less than half the price. If you were looking for max power, the Holly would be your best choice, but what you are asking for is perfect for the TQ.

Contact Demon sizzler (I don't remember his real name) at this link> http://thermoquads.com/ He can supply a perfect carb for what you want.

Why all the bad feedback on eddy carbs ?

Ghoste

For performance tunability they are limited.  For a typical street car, they are a great carb and offer some tuning.  It's just that for that last umph, they don't let you tweak it as far.  Other than that, they are an excellent bang for the buck.

Mainly because there is virtually no tunability or parts for them , for example there are 14 sizes of Squirters, 7 accalerater pump cams with 2 posintions each  & 60 different jet sizes  for Holley [style] carbs & Only  3 squriters small stock & large , 3 pump positions & maybe 25 jet metering rod combos   for eddys + there is No way to tune the secondary opening on the AFB carb other than drilling holes int he counterweight , I hope you have a welder if you remove to much weight

I read somewhere on this site about the transfer from idle circut to primary's there is a problem with the eddys

sounds like I will prbly go with a Holley 870 Avenger.

Daytonalo, I and others have mentioned that an Eddy carb with a larger cam shaft will not have the vacuum needed to pull fuel from the idle well. The Eddy likes 16-18 in of vacuum at idle. Mine was pulling 10-12 in and was idling off the main well. I had a huge off idle stumble that I couldn't tune out. Eddy's tech line even told me to take the carb off. I went with a 750 Mighty Demon and I love it.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

Yup.  Alot of Eddy runners including myself have an off-idle bog that just won't go away.  Take into consideration their limited tuning parts and capabilities and you're left wishing you had bought a Holley...

i had an eddy carb on my 383 and due to bad timing the car back fired and melted my carb due to the visible fuel bowls.  i will never use an eddy for the rest of my life.  the rest of the car is ok though  :icon_smile_big:
