repo rocker moldings for 68-70 chargers,anyone buy these yet ????

I was checking out my originals and they are a little too pitted for me to reuse,and after checking  out the repos ,I might be mistaken but I did not see a recessed hole for 1 screw to go in at the back end near rear tire,like the originals.In the yearone catalog they part # them for 68-70 dodge b-body,and this again is out of place because my 68 coronet's rocker molding is not smooth and has ribbs running down the lenght of the molding. Also,the front of my charger rocker molding is fastened with a metal plate that slides in the molding with a stud going thru the fender that gets a nut on the back side.Just wanted to see if anyone bought these repos yet and if so, how they were.

Paul, I have them on my car.  I got them direct from the supplier, Metro Parts about 5 years ago when they first came out.

My car was'nt originally coded for them though.   They don't have the recess (or a hole for that matter) for the rear screw hole like the originals did.

Thanks Chris,I wonder if they can be reanodized just like having grill trim redone?But being alot bigger, must be costly at that.I might try giving a call to the place who did my grill trim and just inquire about it,before giving up on my originals as they are both in great shape,not dented up,just need to be sanded out and reanodized.

Hi Paul,
I bought the repros too, & plan on putting them on my '69. Like Chris, mine also never had them.
They do sell the large plastic clips for these moldings, they're about $50 for the clips. And, they do not have the screw hole for the 1/4 panel in the rear.
Just an idea, you could always mark & drill the hole in the molding, & use a countersink or something similar to create the recessed screw hole. I may just do that on mine, but practice on a piece of scrap aluminum first.

Bill,was yours an orig rocker mldg car?If so,do you have an orig clip that you can possibly post a pic,I can't tell if the clips I took off mine are original,if they are,I can get then from my autobody paint store,most likely alot cheaper than year one, etc.

No, my car never had them, I'm just adding them.

The plastic clips are similar to your standard rocker molding clip, they have the "Y" at the bottom & the beveled edge at the top that clicks the molding into place. There is a large centering pin in the middle, you need to drill a fairly large hole (1/4", 5/16"ths, maybe?). The pin goes thru the middle & speads little tabs which locks the clip into place. Pretty simple.
You might find something similar to work, as long as it's the same width as the molding. If not, rather than search thru clip books, you might have to just plunk down the dinero for these repro clips.

I can take a picture of the factory clips tomorrow, I just took mine off recently, and there are at least two on each side still on the car, as well as a few that came off completely still attached to the trim pieces.  I was a little more concerned with finding new clips to replace mine if i needed to, but that is some time off since i have lots of body and paint work to do before i'm ready to worry about putting trim back on the car.

did you need to see pics of the factory mouldings themselves?  I can do that also, but they are a bit dirty right now, i haven't tried cleaning them yet.

The one on the end for the screw, it gets bolted to the car?    Where to you get access to the nut?  Wheelwell?

The end at the front gets the clip/nut. At the 1/4 panel, the originals had a pan head Phillips screw.

Yes the end with the stud on it is accessible from inside the front fenderwell.  The rear has a screw from the outside.

Oh OK I see now...i thought the clip got mounted to the rear side & the screw went into the clip itself....


What does the screw go into?  The body or a clip as well?

When I added mine, I just used all plastic clips....

The rear phillips screw ,screws right into the body,the front clip/stud gets a nut that you put on from the back side of the fender,very easy.You can see the hole in this pic.You can just turn the tire and get right at it.

I am restoring a 69 Charger that had the original rocker moldings also.  The quarters and fenders have all been replaced, and now I am wondering about the attachment points for the molding clips.  All the holes are still present in the rockers.  Can anyone tell me how many holes/clip/retainer mounting points there are supposed to be on each side, or provide some measurements so I'll know how to drill the fenders and quarters?

I do recall that the place that made the repo rocker panel chrome trim (Metro) had a fire that burned the whole place up with all his stock.  He may have opened up again.  I got one of the last two that Year One still had in stock.  This was at least three years ago and maybe longer.  Year One also had the clips although there was confusion as to which kit was correct.  I think I determined later that they get the clips from RT Specialties.

well for anyone who wants to know 1/4 hole is no good .....thought it was, painted all the drilled holes but nope too tight ......5/16 is the way to go ....and alittle lube on the centre plugs of the clips helps alot .....and a few firm hits with a hammer .....the first 2 tries were with a flat  tipped punch so i would just hit the pug pin itself ,.......bad idea ...i hit them right through and lost them in the rocker ....it was a bad feeling  but funny at the same time ....done now looks great took me 2 years to decide if i wanted to drill the hole or not

Pics?   Good to hear you didnt drill TOO big.  Always better to start off smaller.  For the life of me I couldnt remember what size I used...
