340magnum

I know the 1973 chargers only came with 340magnums if they where the rallye package now I need some help because with the vin and fender tag. I have been told it's nto a rally but the engine the original engine in the car so I am confused.

VIN

Fender Tag

1972Rallye

Your VIN says your car is a Hardtop (WH23)... a Coupe would start with (WL21).  The  2nd "H" designates it as a 340 car.  Since your car is a Lynch Road built car, You'll need to look at the build sheet or window sticker to see if it is a true Rallye.  You should see code A57...

Just to clear things up a bit.  You could get the Rallye package on 318, 340, 400, and 440 equipped Charger Hardtops AND Charger Coupes. :icon_smile_big:

Hope that helped :2thumbs:

Welcome to the site!

I have a U code 73 Rallye it came with a 440, there is a rallye charger I see at loco; shows with a #s matching 400.  I do know in 73 you could only get a 440 in a rallye or SE.

Well I do not have the build sheet but I know for a fact the only charger in 1973 that where built with a 340 in them are rallyes. I guess I need to do a little more digging but I know now it is a rally because of the engine.

Just to clarify....

Are you saying that all 73 340 Chargers automatically came with the A57 Rallye package?

What I am saying is the only charger in 1973 that came with a 340 was the rallye package.

I don't know. I have a 73' Rally 400 Charger and it has the A57 code.

Put another way, a 340 was only available as an option if A57 Rallye Package option was ordered as well, otherwise the 340 was not availlable.

Interesting proposition. Not sure I believe that...yet. Do you have any factory paperwork like brochures that show A57 is requred with the 340? I also don't understand why it would be required with the 340 and not the 400.

Well here is the official broschere from dodge for the 1973 charger. I forgot I had this so I am right about the 340 in every charger being a rallye.

Nice post. I didn't know that. Thanks.

If the A57 was required with the 340 and the car in question has a 340 then it is a Rallye.

1972rallye put you on the right track. It's common for Lynch Road cars to NOT have A series codes so the A57 is probably not coded on a 73 LR tag. Look on the broadcast sheet or window sticker.

The bad thing is I do not have the broadcastsheet or window sticker. I contacted my uncle 'this would be who I bought it fromback in 2002' and asked him if he had the broadcast sheet filed away somewhere and just my luck he does not have it either. When he first bought it back in 98 he contacted Galen Govier about the car because he could not figure it out and galen told him it was a rallye so I have contacted Galen again in hopes to get my broadcast sheet. The more I am learning about my car the less I am wanting to sell it because I still can go out to the garage and even though it is torn apart waiting for work to be done I still love just looking at it and firing up the engine and letting it idle. ;D

I just have to ask... have you looked in all the usual places (under the carpet, in rear or front seat springs, behind front seat back panel, in headliner, etc.)?  There were several printed for the production of each car... maybe you'll find one someplace unusual.  They did a LOT of strange things at Lynch Rd. :icon_smile_big:

Just a thought...

Yeh I have the interior out and the doors off I checked behind the glovebox I looked everywhere under front and back seats and nothing.Back to work I go
