I just put a remanufactured edelbrock thunder series carb on my 440. Now it idles REALLY high, until I put it in drive, the wheels spin when doing this. Idles nicely when there though. 1)What is going on here?

2) what is a PCV valve-where does it hook up to?

3)I'm getting a big backfire and loss of power when I put the hammer down too,

4) kickdown is not kicking in either. I put a new edelbrock throttle lever kit on too! and the kickdown IS adjusted correctly

1.  You've adjusted the idle speed screw, right?  If not, maybe your throttle linkage is hanging up on something and preventing the throttle from closing itself.

2.  The PCV valve stands for Positive-Crankcase-Ventilation valve, and this system helps to purge harmful combustion vapors from the within the engine itself.  On my 'Eddy Performer 750, the PCV valve connects with a hose on the very front and center fitting.  You should have a manual of some sorts that will show you where to hook up the PVC.

3.  Did you have the backfiring before?  Also, are you using your vacuum advance canister?  Make sure that it's hooked up to the proper fitting on your 'carb, be it ported or full manifold vacuum fittings.  Check your timing anyway.  Also, 'Eddy 'carbs are almost always lean from the factory-you may have to try jetting up, adjusting your accelerator pump drive link to provide more squirt and/or placing a bigger accelerator pump squirter, among other things.

4.  I'm pretty sure that your 'carb doesn't link up to the kickdown linkage like your previous one does.  When you use aftermarket parts like 'carbs and intakes, following the "shop" manual's method on how to adjust things like the kickdown linkage do not really apply, so there's no "correct" way to adjust that-you'll have to play with it until you are satisfied that it's performing right.

Head out to Edelbrock.com to check out the owner's manual, tuning guides and diagrams for your 'carb..

Thanks for the response Myk,

I did adjust the idle speed screw, but when I turned it down, it was idling too low in drive, so had to turn it back up again or risk stalling

I know where the PCV is on the carb, just not sure where it goes to after that. My block is a 78 RB ( if this helps ) There was a little backfiring before, mainly due to the dirty old holley needing a decent tune. Will put some new spark plugs in also and check the timing

I am using the vacuum advance, tried unpluggin it when engine was warm and put my finger over hose, there was no sucking so I plugged into the drivers side (as per instructions), will try other side anyhow.

Thanks for the tips, will check out eddy.com too and have a play around with kickdown etc.

Does it do this after the engine is up to normal operating temp?  If not, then it might be your fast idle that you need to back out a tad.

Idles real high in park and real low in drive....sounds like a timing issue to me....I had that problem before.

Chryco Psycho

Sounds like a vacuum leak , there should be a port on the rear center of the carb [sometimes front ] for PCV
the backfire would also be a lean /vacuum leak problem

TylerCharger69

I agree with that too...however...if there is no leak, then it sounds like your timing is W-a-ay too far advanced.   These are the EXACT symptoms my car had after accomodating an Edelbrock carb.   I looked for leaks...none.  Adjusting the carb idle either way just made matters worse... but when I retarded the vacuum, it started smoothing out and idling correctly.   May not be your issue,  but  it's a strong possibility!!

It still does it after normal operating temperature.

I know where the PCV is on the carb, but where does it go to after that, or should I just keep it blocked off?

Working through everything else right now, thanks again guys!

PCV  goes in the center (large port)  on the front of that Eddy carb.

I think he's asking where the PCV line goes onto the motor itself?  If he is, then it's on the passenger side valve cover with a PCV valve, of course...

There is two idle speed needles to adjust in the front of the carb.

Ahhh, yes, thanks. Idle speed is now right too
