OK , I probably know the answer, but got a call tonight from someone I don't even know.  He wants to know if chargers ever came with the gas caps on both sides of the quarter(one on the driver and one on the passenger).
I told him I saw that ebay listing as well and pretty much thought that was some sort of mod, but told him I'd ask you guys to be 100%.
I promised him I'd call him back when I got the official word.  The good thing is, I found out there is a Mopar graveyard less than 3 miles from my house and this guy is supposed to have 2 Superbirds. Right!

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Badbob

No, that was found on the jag xj series

It seems like it was a somewhat common mod done in the 70's. I have seen 4 of them now. Each had a differently hand fabricated system of installing the cap.

in the back of this months Mopar Muscle there is an Ad for a charger convertable... it was one of those Concept cars. It had 2 caps on it. however none of the production cars had 2.

I seem to recall it was on the 2nd gen prototype but was eliminated to save expense.

As mentioned it was not available from the factory.

In June I spoke with Carl Cameron who recently passed away. He said they designed the car with dual gas caps but it did not make it past upper management due to cost savings.

It was an option on the aussie Chargers... I'm not sure if the 2nd was functional or not (I'm thinking yes).

:iagree:

The 2nd gen was originally designed to have two gas caps and fill tubes but it made for problems with space in the trunk and the bean counters didn't like the costs involved.

"An aggressive exterior with power to match was enough to pull in the performance boys-especially when abetted by a pair of pipes blaring out the back, and brawny red-sidewall rubber hitting the pavement."

Interesting topic. I've never see or heard of this..

Car's got a lot of pickup. It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

I have also seen a photo of a clay styling mockup with the dual caps on it and IIRC a much more pronounced fastback shape to the rear of the car.

A freind of mine has done this to his 70 Charger....

BOTH are functional.....many just graft the cap to the quarter & the pass side one is a dummy......both his work to fill his fuel cell.

I had heard it was originaly designed to have two gas caps and almost had the one NASCAR type flip top scratched for a cheaper more traditional gas cap but one of the executives compromised and went with just one.  I have that in a book somewere if someone is really interested I will look up the source.

Looks like your friend did a pretty nice job on his, Chris.

This one was on Egouge earlier this year. Obviously done a loooong time ago.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

those pics of the factory convert show the Capps further back then the stock location...
What i heard was,..  an exec. after much discussion in the styling studio, simply slapped one where you see it today..
also remember the baracuda and the GTX in '67 sported them on the side of the car...
I get alot of comments on it, especially at gas stations... IMO it's one of those trick CHARGER features that bring the design into the realm of sculpture.
I was wondering why the new sedan doesn't have one...   :shruggy:

could be,..  :shruggy: read the post about the birth of the Charger design,.. I'm pretty sure that's where I read it..

hey! How'd you get more post then me?!. and dodgefreak?..  :icon_smile_wink:

what i'd like to see is the plumbing inside the dual gas cap cars,.. i wanna run a flexi tube down to the tank in an  L  bend to open up even more trunk space.. if ya' had two caps that would have to be the ticket...

ok here's the link:

Seems Sias let Engle slap it where it is to keep him distracted from the messing with the rest of the design...
(just above and to the left of the posterboard sketch)...

The new sedan is forbidden from getting one because that would be a retro styling feature and everyone knows that doesn't sell.
