The Great Bacon Debate

OK, so us Canucks are a bit different, not much but a bit!

We like bacon, the type commonly found in grocery stores and restaurants across North America.  We also like our Canadian Bacon but it is never reffered to here as that but more commonly known as back bacon or peameal bacon.

It is common, but not found everywhere.

Example - if I tell my Wife "we are out of bacon", she will add it to the list and will bring home a pound of strip bacon.  Photo # 1.

If I tell her "we need some back bacon", she'll bring home either a pound or two of peameal bacon.  Photo # 2.

Swiped from a site as I am no bacon expert but I do know that it is not like ham.

First of all, let me say what it is not. In Canada you would never hear an order for 'Canadian Bacon'. Rather, 'two over easy with peameal' can be heard everywhere. Back bacon is made from the boneless pork loin, with the fat trimmed to 1/8" and cured in a sweet pickle brine. The special ingredients used in the cure create a product that is less salty than regular bacon with a touch of sweetness. The loin is then rolled in yellow cornmeal giving it the signature 'peameal' coating and par-baked to ensure uniformity.

There is really nothing to compare to the flavor of peameal back bacon. Light and lean, a little sweet and a little tart , tender and juicy! The 'Canadian Bacon' found in your supermarket is neither Canadian nor is it bacon! It is ham and tastes nothing like peameal bacon. Until you taste the unique flavor of Peameal Back Bacon, you are missing a dining milestone.

Personally, I like it fried with a bit of butter to keep it from sticking to the pan.  With eggs, on a bun or as a side to my pancakes or waffles.

Come on up North and I'll treat you to lunch.  Just don't all come at the same time!

Hey Mike you are saying frying bacon in butter or frying the peameal bacon? Wow, that's an instant heart attack! I'm curious to taste the peameal bacon, never had it! Is it like a spam kind of meat? :shruggy: Next time I'm up north going to have to try it  :yesnod:

Mmmmm.... bacon.

It's not SPAM-like at all. It's more like a super-lean roast. All meat except for the little bit of fat left on the outside for flavour and I think it makes the corn meal stick better.
There's not a lot of fat to the meat.
It's essentially a pork ternderloin roast but cured.

Pan-fried in butter and then tossed on a toasted bun with some mozzarella cheese and sweet relish. Delicious for breakfast, lunch, or a quick dinner.

Actually, regular "rasher" bacon is good that way too but is a bit saltier so wash it down with a beer. ;)

I love bacon, I just don't eat it too often. I might be able to eat more now than I bought a bike to get some exercise. Smoked bacon is my favorite though, I can eat a whole pound of it.   :o   (but I won't)

It would be nice to have breakfast with a Canadian & an Englishman, then order up some Canadian bacon with English muffins to annoy them both.  :D

No Mike - the peameal needs the butter because, as DCF says, there is no fat and it will stick to the pan.

I like it on a kaiser with onions, cheddar and some mustard.

Maple cured regular bacon - even better.

Sometimes I will pour a bit of maple syrup when frying regular bacon.  The pan is a bitch to clean but it's worth it.

So shakey did you go an take pictures of bacon this morning or did you have pics stored on your computer?

Since I'll be in Belleville all next week I'll just have to order up 2 over easy wheat toast hash browns and a side of peameal because that sounds pretty good to me.

Example - if I tell my Wife "we are out of bacon", ...

I told my old lady to bring home the bacon and she traded me in on a young pig... at least I had a job and didn't live with my mommy at 39 years old...  ::)

:haha:

Years ago, my Wife and I and a few newly married couples were sitting around discussing careers and children etc.  I have always been kinda bold and said that I would like to have my Wife at home to raise the children, at least in their younger years.  I had also stated that the ultimate decision would be hers but if she asked for my input I would state that it would be best if you stayed with the Children until they are old enough to go to school full time and then you can pick up your career where you left off.  I finished the statement with - "I'll bring home the bacon and she can cook it".

The f'in looks I got from the girls at the table and the fact that my buddies all burst out laughing didn't help.

Swiped the pics from the www.

I did however take a photo of the banana coconut chocolate chip cake my Wife made yesterday afternoon.  I got home from work and was greeted by a beautiful aroma from the kitchen and my 2 year old jumping up and down so excited that she helped Mommy bake a cake.

So, what's goin' on in Belleville, ON?

4402tuff4u

There is this stuff called "pork roll" that I had a long time ago in New Jersey in a breakfast sandwich. For some reason is not really found in NY, just in NJ. I wonder if it's the same thing!  :shruggy:

A super secret project my company has me working on, can't give you the details but it involves

Aliens, Dr. Z and an orchestrated 9/11 type attack organized by the Bildaberger commission to move the world one step closer to world domination.

Naaaaaa but it sounds better than saying I am going to Belleville ON for training.

At least I won't get hassled by the immigration nazi's that usually hassle me when I come up to Canada for work.
