G'day guys,

Can anyone tell me by looking at the pics what kind of diff is in my 71 Charger ? The more info the better......not too many guys down here to ask - hope someone can help.
There is a stamped number on the front/side which reads 2070742 then a triangle, then a "1".

Challenger340

It's known as an 8 3/4 differential.  ( eight and three quarter)

the last 3 digits, "742" on the side of the removable "pumpkin", mean it's accepts gearsets with a 1- 3/4" pinion.

I hope this is helpful.
Only wimps wear Bowties !

Thanks for that.

Are they any good ? I imported the car just over 18 months ago and stilllearning. The reason I'm asking what it is is because there appears to be a pretty bad oil leak from the axle oil seal on the drivers side. I'm wondering what kind I have to ask/look for.

I don't know if oil seals are the same for various models so I want to know exactly what I have.

the axle seals are available pretty readily, try mopar performance or summit racing-an 8 3/4 is plenty strong, and gear changes are easily made by swapping center sections-good luck!

Chryco Psycho

the 742 carrier is basically the strongest version
all 8 3/4s use the same axle seals
