Vin decoder correct?

Is this decoder result correct? I'm asking because I am surprised. I always assumed my car was a 500, cause that's what the guy that sold it to me  advertised it as. If this is true, I feel better about R/T badges being on it, but a little worse about how much it's been modified.

XS29 is normally a Charger R/T, yes.  However...

Is there another reason why the guy that sold you your car thought it was a Charger 500?  In 1970 a Charger 500 was a notch down from an R/T, but in 1969 a Charger 500 was one of the purpose-built Aero cars.  Normally '69 500's have XX29 in the VIN, but there are RARE examples of Charger 500's without the XX in either the VIN or on the Fender Tag.  I'd be interested to know if it has the fastback window plug and/or the fixed-headlight Coronet grille.

Here's the car Gene:

My (mostly uneducated) guess is that it isn't a 69 500. It's hard to say since the front clip is custom but the rear window would be a dead giveaway. Yours just doesn't have the "plug" molded into the sail panels and trunk. That's a lot of work to do/undo and it wouldn't hurt on a drag car so I'm not sure why anyone would remove it. Do you have the fender tag?

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

No Hemigeno, I think the that the guy that sold me the car was as clueless as I was..... and apparently still am. I think both of us believed that the R/T was the rarer of the two models and without any emblems on the car at the time and a lack of knowledge as to what the differences are, I just assumedit was a 500. Didn't care actually. I had the car of my dreams either way.

Troy, I hate to admit that I don't know what the plug is. Don't laugh too hard.. do you have a picture? And no I don't have the fender tag, most of the modifications were done before I bought the car. including the removal of the nose.

Sounds like you guys are sure that it's an  R/T...cool works for me

MorePwr

Just learned the difference...Wow! the 500s are sweet and super rare.. a total of 500 or so produced?

500's rock!

Check out the Aero Cars section here on the site and you'll see lots of pictures. Pay attention to the grill and rear window differences. There are some other details too but you can see from those why I don't think yours would have been converted.

This site is educational, to say the least! were there any other models/derivatives of the Charger in 69, other than the 500 and the R/T?

Yep, the Charger Daytona.

MorePwr

So the R/T was the base model in 69? I am surprised!

Troy

No, the base model was the Charger - the rest were options/packages. The R/T was the performance package added to the base Charger. The primary difference was the engine choices as the R/T only came with a 440 or 426 Hemi but base Chargers could come with a slant 6, 318, 383 2bbl or 383 4bbl (in 69). The 500 model was the first crack at aerodynamics for NASCAR (in 69) and the Daytona was the next revision of the aero package. Daytona and 500 model modifications were in addition to the R/T options which made the Hemi Daytona the most expensive of them all.

i like what you wrote about being happy with the car of your dreams, i belive that applies to most all of us... here,..
(probably even the brand X guys visiting the site...  :icon_smile_wink:)
there was also a S.E. Speccial Edition package from '69 up, basicly a luxo dress up package...
so an ultimate charger would be a R/T, 500 or DAYTONA with that option package, a four speed and a HEMI.
(I tend to capitolize DAYTONA and HEMI if they are original examples and lowercase them when writing about the new dcx examples...
...also notice the stainless wind deflectors on the A-pillars on DAYTONAS and 500s...

Thanks Troy, I get it now....finally!

Thanks Brock,
And Thanks for the info. I agree with your lack of enthusiasm in the new stuff (If that's what your stating). we'll have to let the next generation or so, sort through all the crap and decide what is cool!

hadn't noticed the wind deflectors. thanks

as far as i know i don't think it was a 500. the sequence # if i am not mistaken should be always be XX but yeah if you go onto the eing car part there you shall find the answer! also if you have a fender tag ( which i assume someone took off and ditched by the looks of the front end ) the build date will help as well   good luck and either way you have a very cool car!  :yesnod:
