I did a search some like it ,some don't but what all can you tell me about the mopar 284 484 purple shaft cam  for  a 440 ?How does it perform? What kind of numbers will it put down in a built  440 with ported 906 heads?

firefighter3931

The 484 is not a bad cam, but there are better. It needs at least a 2800 stall and 3.91 gears to perform well, especially in a heavy car. With mildly ported heads, headers, good intake and carb it can make in the 425hp range.....but all that depends on how well the heads flow.  ;)

With all the more modern cams available today for Mopars, I'm curious as to why you are leaning to the 284 484?

I would also stay away from the purple shaft cams. Many....no..make that all of the modern cams have far superior lobe designs. New computer technology has made a purple shaft a paper weight in many situations. Engle, Comp, Ultradyne, Isky. Look around and have some fun with the research. I love my solid Engle cam. I think Chryco loves Engle Hydraulics but Ultradyne solids. Firefighter just likes cams. Don't quote me on all of this but You will get good info here.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

the 484 is decent , I have seem some very powerful engines use it
the Engle cams are good & the VooDoo Lunati cams are close as well , I use some Mopar solids & Ultradyne mostly

what about the mopar  268/284 450/458 or the 280/474 purple shaft cams?are they any good. The reason I leaning towards the mopar cams is they come with lifters and they are priced reasonable.

You really need to provide more information for a proper recommendation : compression ratio, headers or manifolds, intake manifold, carb, rear end gearing, stall speed ?

My set up will be a 440 balanced and blue printed, kb  10.25 compression 30 or 40 bore.headers, wieand duel plane intake,,demon 750 ,either ported 906's or edel.rpm heads.323 gears and maybe a 2400 lock up. I want a streetable 425-450 hp .

What cam would you recomnend?

A couple of comments :

(1) if you want to run over 10:1 compression you should be looking at an aluminum head. Edelbrock or Indy EZ's....preferably in the 10.5:1 is ideal.

(2) Iron heads are fine but you should be shooting for 9.3-9.5 compression max with an open chamber and no quench.

For a streetable 425-450hp you'll need some good flowing heads. The 484 can hit that mark but you really won't have enough gear to make it snappy out of the hole....like i said previously : 3.91 gears minimum.

A smaller cam with less overlap and duration can be a problem with iron heads and pump gas....too much cylinder pressure and it will ping. It's a delicate balancing act.

If it were mine : zero deck piston with a closed chamber aluminum head and 10.5:1 compression. A cusom ground Engle cam, preferably solid in the 235* @ .050 range or a hydraulic in the 230* range, max.

anyone ever ran the 280 474 purple shaft?

Chryco Psycho

Yes I have , the 474 & 484 both work well with the right pices matched to it

Which would be a better cam of the two, the 280 474 or the 284 484 for lower end power and streetability? Also what would the difference in power between the two? Thanks for the input.

The 280* cam has less duration and overlap so it will be more streetable. The power numbers really depend on the cylinder head flow as i mentioned above but i'd guess that both cams in the same engine might see a 15-20hp difference.  :Twocents:

I am running a 292/.509 purple cam in my 440.  I will let you know how it goes when I do some trial runs.

As far as the past, I have ran nothing but a 292/.509 cam in my 71 Charger drag car.  with a .030 over 440, 11.5 to 1, two 600 eddy's, 2" hooker super comps, 4.56 gear, 516 heads with big valves, and that cam, I ran a best of 12.17 in the 1/4 with a 1.77 0 - 60 ft time.  Car didnt hook up that well due to the terrible rear suspension, but she flew at the end.

hope that helps.

I have a question ,which cam was refered to as the street hemi grind in the old days?

Ghoste

I suppose it depends on what year if you wanted to get technical about it, but it's generally considered to be the 284/484 one.  I think that was the spec that was used through most of the Street Hemi years.

Chryco Psycho

the Hemi grind is no longer available , , it was a .471 lift cam

Ghoste

In 66 and 67.  From 68 through 71 it was a 484 lift.
