Just some advice to those who store there future resto projects outside with vinyl tops still installed.  Heres some pics of a 68 I picked up Fri.  Nice solid body with 1 problem.  below the vinyl top the car metal was gone.  Check out the pics and you might think twice about letting the car sit with the top on.

Ghoste

:o.  WOW!!!  That just defies description. :scared:

I like the rest of the car.

terrible one

HOLY COW!!!  :o That's probably the worst roof I have EVER seen, and the rest of the car looks super solid!  :rotz:

The car is very solid. even the floorboards are perfect I dont believe water was getting into the car, the top was just soaking water up and holding it against the metal roof skin.  The roof bracing and rear window shelf are all fine too.  its just the skin.  Luckily I have a roof here so I'll be swapping the roof skin.  I still think for 3000.00 i got a good deal.

Now we know why that roof was cut off the orange 68 in desert valley.

seen a few like that ,   looks a real solid car  as well ,   most if not all  of that rot could of been avoided if Chrysler  painted  the roof on  vinyl top cars

That's pretty sad. :o I have seen a '69 318 Charger in similar condition, it's a very restorable car for the most part but the du&%a$$ left it out in the elements for years with the vinyl top on it just like yours was. The best part of it was that the idiot thought someone would come along and pay him $12k for it with the Swiss cheese roof option. It's still sitting there rotting away. :rotz:

Wow :o . It's weird the way Mopars rust. I dragged home a 72 parts car last month. It's been sitting outside for at least the last 15 years. I ripped the original vinyl canopy roof off and this is what I found. Even with just primer on 90% of the roof it looks pretty good :scope:

I thought about getting a vinyle top car before.....now I dont want one anymore. Hardtops from now on..

Ghoste

Well, I know I'm in for some real pain when I lift the vinyl on my car but it has to be done.  I know I'll be painting the roof before I put the top back on there.

Wow!!!  I had a new vinyl top installed on my 69 about 4 years ago and already it has a couple of bubbles forming along the edges.  I just know it's rust and I'm gonna have to fix it before the year is out or it may get real bad.  I've considered painting my roof white instead of replacing the top, now I may have just made up my mind after seeing that.   :P

I think it's the ultra rare super-flo ventilation system. ;D

Geez, don't slam the doors hard, that back window might just end up in the back seat. :o

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

golly jeebus...

Incidentally, I just had a couple of visible bubbles under mine as well... but when I pulled it off ... *shudder*...  That's why I'm never putting vinyl on mine again.  Unfortunately, some of us simply don't have the option of garages...

I know, some people say a roof that's properly prepared will last even with vinyl, but others say otherwise - me, I'm not chancing it.

It's all in how your treat the roof prior to the vinyl being installed and how you store it there after.

I have no worries.

The roof was treated quite properly with corrosion preventative measures when done and the car is being stored properly.

I love my gator grain vinyl roof.  :D

:iagree:

i have a couple of little bubbles in the right  front of my roof . i'm gonna tear the roof off of it in the spring. i will store it in the car capsule over the winter months. Rene
I won't be wronged, I wont be Insulted and I wont be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others, and I require the same from them.
