fire wall bulkhead?

I am so glad I found this site!!!

I have a 1966 charger and what I believe to be a firewall bulkhead that is shot.  It does not keep contact.   The dark blue wire from the starter relay runs to the Z terminal, according to the wiring schematic, to what I think is a bulkhead.  I have to apply constant pressure to that plug to make it contact.  If I do not, I loose all power to the car.

Where can I buy a replacement?

I have not taken it a part yet to see if I can fix it.  The whole assemble, wires, plug and base, seems very brittle.  I do not want to open a can of worms till I know I can fix it.  Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

myk

The bulkhead connector assembly is one of the weakest links in an otherwise great car.  There are no reproductions as of yet, at least, none that I know of.  Your best bet would be to try and rewire the car and clean up the connectors, and/or find a used one that is in better shape that what you already have.  If you want new, then you'll have to do a custom wiring setup from "Painless Wiring" or something...

thank you,  so does the aftermarker wiring harness, like Painless, come w/ new connectors so if i got an engine and underdash harness the would have new connectors?

i have also lost my dash lights but i have found the page on that problem.

Replace damaged wires and terminals are dirty easy stuff, but need just a little bit of patiente. Removing form car and working on a table is the best you can do.

I have learnt about underdash harness never need to be replaced as far they are not burn or cut or who knows. They have lots of protection down the dash. The car harness tipically damaged are under the hood, more specifically engine harness. Oftenly also front ligths harness.

underdash harness just need REALLY care at bulkhead terminals.

You can still buy the underdash Bulkhead Connector, fitting years 1966-1976 NOS MoPar ABCDE
You can get an NOS on one ebay. I am doing one right now, I had one wire melt this connector,
the rest of the harness was fine except the one wire that melted it, nice unit.

Thanks for the input.
Hopefully I can clean it all up and try to fix any retainers or clips as needed so I do not have have to install a new bulkhead and connectors. What is best way to clean old brittle wires and connectors?
Not sure if it is a related problem but I have lost my dash lights and tach.  I have read a lot about the dash lights and I do not think it is just a bad connection but hopefully the tach not working is. But those are problems for a different day. Right now I just want the car to stop going dead while driving it.

God, I hated when that happened.  Pull over, jiggle the bulkhead, start the car, drive away, repeat as necessary.  I would just try to isolate and repair the wires that relate to the engine harness-I think that would stave off your stalling problems...

pne123

i have it pretty much figured out now.  I thought it was the one wire but then i realized it was the whole connector that was moving when i pushed on the wire.  now i have folded up sandpaper (it is what i had handy, wont burn easy and has grip to stay in place) wedged in there to keep down force on the bottom connector.  2 weeks straight and no stall.
i am almost to the point of calling it "good" and moving on to the next issue  :icon_smile_big:

Looks like these guys may have what you are looking for

http://www.chargerspecialties.com/

I haven't done business with them, yet, but if the wiring on my find is typical of what I've seen in the past I will be.

Looks like they have the 8 wire conecters to the bulkhead.

hope this helps
