Here is the story. I really want to learn some basics of body work so I can do my own cars. Not because I am cheap (well, thats not the whole reason), but because I really want to be involved in the work done on my cars. More than cutting a check.

Anyway I am not sure what color it will be down the road, but I wanted to do something very forgiving as I knew me being a novice was going to impact the quality. So, here is the job I did aided a bit by a buddy who does autobody work. He did a bit and guided me, but my hands were right in there the whole time. The work isn't top shelf, but for 9 days start to finish done in a garage much by a novice, it isn't bad. It looks better than any Macco job I have seen (thats not saying much...lol).

Day 1. Found out the rear quarter was really dented up and there was hardly any body line in it. It was a repop bought in 1989. I guess they didn't worry about body lines back then.

Day 2. Finally got the quarter hammered out and used some filler to smooth.

Day 3. Worked on the Quarter tops, roof, trunk lid and filler panel. I replaced the roof filler with metal 2 Metal a while ago. This day went easy as I did much of this body work over the past year.

Day 4 was very productive. This day we worked on the fenders, doors and hood. The drivers side fender horrible. It was patched a few times, mudded a few times and very few body lines were still intact. Check out the "eyes" that formed while sanding!

This door handle came out nice. It was pushed in earlier this year when a deer ran into it.

Day 5 Most of the stuff was wrapped up.

Day 6. The Charger specialties valance corners were way too small. So my buddy fabricated a set.

We sprayed maybe 5 coats of primer and handsanded between each with 320 until the last coat. We used 400 then. After that it was sealed with sealer.

Day 7. Made sure all imperfections were taken care of in sealer and started painting.

Day 8. Started reassembling anything that didn't come in direct contact with the paint.

Day 9 placed on the doorhandles, locks, and affixed the decals.

9 Days??? Wow! It took me 9 days to move mine to the new garage...

Well, I have been a bit busy lately but I guess I need to get motivated. That helps a lot!

Thanks guys. Yeah, it was done very quick. I wont go that fast again, but no regrets here as it looks good enough for a GL. It was a great learning experience too.

Oh, need to mention, my brother Matt was involved too. He helped a ton with the sanding and making the runs to the stores for sodas, tape, primer, whatever else we needed on the spot.

Looks great cant wait to see it in real life!

Let me know when ya road trip it to Portland!

Sure thing Beers! Are you doing the all Mopar car show on Augusta next month?

Yeah Strat, I am proud, but some of it makes me wince. Once she is cured I will wetsand and buff out the stuff that is bugging me and I will be much happier.

Wow! As Chris said, the 9 day timeline is very impressive. Nice go!

Good job!  Car looks good and as mentioned above, you should feel proud that you did it yourself.  Bodywork will be the second last task I take on, engine rebuilding will be the last.

I am always far more impressed with a car that has been built by its' owner.

Congrats.

P.S. You could contact Telvis, he might be interested in your services!

Thanks for the praise guys. I don't think I would do anyone elses car at this stage of the game. Give me some years of practice and I will think about it  ;)

MGBRingo

That was a very quick job.  Looks nice.

Just an FYI on body work.  When you sand and end up with distinct lines between the filler or primer and the metal like you have you will be able to see the transition.  The goal should be to 'feather' them out more and not end up with such sharp transition lines between the two.

Old Moparz

9 Days? Isn't that a bit slow? I heard the earth was made a little bit quicker.  :smilielol:

Just kidding, it looks great!

MGB, yes, he did show me to feather. The only filler you see pictured is the fender and that was during the DA sanding showing the old filler. The new filler hadn't been applied yet. That pic also shows the fender was changed once as it was a gold fender originally and the rest of the car was F3 green.
