Trans removal at home

I have a ? about pulling the transmission out of my 69.  I have pulled small blocks plenty of times with the transmission just because it was quicker/easier than disconnecting the trans from the motor, but never have I pulled a big block and trans together, in fact I never have pulled a big block before.  How much of a pain in the  :moon: would it be to pull the 727 at home, without pulling the motor, or is that safe at all.  I imagine you got to get the car up pretty high to side it out, and I aint a big fan of dying under the car.

I have done it a few times-First I lift the back up and put some jack stands under it, disconnect the u-joint by the axle and pull it out of there. Then I jack the front up, you are right get it as high as poss. The trans can tip a bit pulling it out, tali end first then lift and  slid it out.  You need 4 jack stands and a piece of wood for the jack when its under the trans. pan. Its not too bad, the cross member comes out, have the jack under the trans , coolant lines unhook, the TQ bolts-only 4 - and the bell housing bolts, and starter.

The biggie is putting it in, that TQ has to in all the way AND not come out as its going back in, you should have some space between the TQ and flex plate. It help if you have a helper put the jack under the trans. after its back under the car while you lift it up-The fun part of the job-I like lifting the tail up but then the TQ comes out, unless you have a clamp on the bell housing. You can't put in on the jack and push it under , won't fit.

Takes a few hours, the more times you do it the faster it goes.

Don't forget to drain the fluid from it before you go tugging on that trans. A whole lot of fluid comes flying out of the tail shaft if you don't. You will get a bath in the fluid. Oh, and while that trans is out, put a 9 1/2 to 10 in converter in that thing. You'll love it.  :yesnod:

I've done mine 5 times because TCI tranny's suck.  I've got it down to about 2 hours, but take your time and follow the suggestions on this site. 

I used car ramps for the front (jack the car up and slide them under the tires) - Then jack stands under the axle - Disconnect the drive shaft (use a stopper for fluid) - Disconnect the linkage - Disconnect the cooler lines - Speedo cable - loosen the bolts on the crossmember - Disconnect Torque Converter - Remove Starter - Remove Dipstick (tranny fluid will gush out if you haven't drained it) - Place Jack under tranny and take out Bell Housing Bolts - Slowly hold tranny to jack and take out crossmember - pull back and play the balancing game - lower jack and lift tranny off jack and slide her out.

It is much easier with a buddy.  I had to buy 5 dinners though.   :flame:

Hold on, nobody said four ramps. The drive shaft will be out so the car could roll. You could use the parking brake if it still works but I would not trust it. Jack stands at least in the front or back would be better. Ramps uses the tires and they can roll. You are going to be pushing that trans to the motor, it should be ok but then again it could start to move and once it does it may not stop. Don't mean to scare you but you don't get a second chance if the car comes down.
What I like to do also is to take the spare tire and put it under the car by the front fame rails, this way you have a chance if it comes down. PS I am skinny.

NO, you would never want to use 4 ramps.  I only used 2, with regular jack stands in the back under the axles.  I did this because I only have 4 jack stands, and this allows me to have 2 while doing the tranny and exhaust. 

FYI, I have the Flowmaster 3" exhaust kit and the y part of it has to come out too.  Hence the need for more jack stands.

Sorry, sorry sorry, your right, I said four ramps but I was seeing the jackstands, I just typed before I thought.
