Hi, Was wondering if one of you could decode this tag for me. All i know are the basics, 383 Magnum and JJ1 Gold, was wondering what the rest is.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Here's my take on your tag info:

XP29  =  Base model Charger
62  =  383 4bbl HP
5   =  3-speed 727 automatic
46  =  F70 x 14 whitewall tires
216  =  February 16th, 1968 Scheduled Build Date
077871  =  Vehicle Shipping Number (a/k/a "S.O. number")

2 = 5    Driprail mouldings
3 = 0    Body belt mouldings
7 = 8    Wheel lip mouldings
A = 4    3.23 rear axle ratio, and the lack of an "8" under "X" means it is an open rear end

C6Y =  Gold-colored vinyl bucket seat interior - Charger trim grade
JJ1  =  Medium Gold Metallic
U = J    Gold upper door frame color

A = 1   26" radiator
H = 1   Power Brakes
R = 1   AM Radio
S = 1   Air Conditioning
X = 1   Tinted Glass (all)
Y = 7   White vinyl top

a = 5   center front seat
b = 4   bucket seats
h = 7   hood mounted turn signal indicators
m = 6  driver's outside remote operated mirror

I think that's all the codes on there.  Hope this helps!

A common belief is the engine code 62 (E63 in 69 and 70) indicate an HP engine as well as the H VIN code. These codes only indicate it is a 383-4bbl not which version it is. The only tag that can confirm the installation of a 383HP engine is a 69 or 70 Lynch Road tag.

As this is Charger with auto and A/C, it more likely has the 330 horse engine and not the 335 horse Magnum. :Twocents:

There's conflicting information about whether or not the 335hp 383 was installed in anything other than the 'Bee and Runner models.  I have some documentation which says 335hp in just those two models (except when they were equipped with A/C), and other info that lists the 335hp version as the E63 engine in the Charger - at least for 1969 anyway.  I have also heard of '69 Charger 383 4bbl engines having (original) orange paint on them, which was supposedly reserved for the 335hp motors.  Who knows...

Collectively, a lot of people refer to any 383 4bbl as an HP engine, when you're correct that only the 335 horse version is called a Magnum (in a Dodge).  I also agree that it's a safe assumption that a car with A/C would not have come with the 335 horse mill.

To really muddy the waters here...  In 1968, it is my understanding that only HP motors had the ID number stamped on the bellhousing flange of the engine and trans.  I have heard of 383-4 Charger engines with that stamp, and 383-2 engines without that stamp.  If that is true, that would lead one to conclude that Chrysler considered all 4bbl 383 engines to be an HP engine thus requiring the ID stamp.  I don't mean to make these statements as facts, since I'm only repeating what I have read from other threads.  I'm open to correction on this point, but it does make me stop and think what the definition of "HP" is.

Actually, I've spent some time on this very subject and here's what I've found...There are 4 different 383-4bbl engine assemblies for the 69 B bodies. Two HP 335 and two 330 horse engines. One each for automatic and manual tranny. Each has a three digit engine assemby code number. The engine assembly number is on the BS and on a Lynch Road tag. The 925 and 926 assembly is the orange 335 horse engine. (you can see this on a 69 A12 car tag as they started life as an E63 383HP car)

I have BS and tags showing turquoise 330 horse engines were installed in 69 Road Runners and Super Bees equipped with A/C regardless if it was a manual or automatic. If a RR or SB has A/C, it has the 330 engine. (If anyone can provide a BS or Lynch Road fender tag showing otherwise, I'd LOVE to see it)

I have BS showing the 383HP engine WAS used in 69 Chargers and Sport Satellites when equipped with a four speed. I have no Charger or other Belvedere/Satellite equipped with an automatic or A/C having the 335 engine.

I have seen info that indicates the pattern continues with the 70 models. The 383 manual Charger got the HP application and the automatics did not.

I'm still working on 68 applications and A bodys with 383's...stay tuned :)
