Rearend and what to look for pitting etc.

I found a salvage close to me that has a few old 8 3/4 third members. What should I look for as far as pitting and wear on the unit and gears?
If it has any pitting at all is it bad, or is there some type of chemical that will help clean it up?

I've seen pitted gears that ran very quiet and I've seen perfect looking gears that howled like a coyote.

I'm of the opinion that the only way to judge a 3rd member is to run it. (other than obvious breakage)
