help identify my 440

I cleaned up the numbers on my block and I found this on the pad:

E 440 HP
3 23

The casting # on the drivers side is 3698830

I've been researching this and have not found solid answers. The casting indicates a 73-78 block however the E on the pad indicates 1969 or cast crank. I don't know. Can someone help me out?

An E before the displacement is the year code for '69, an E following the displacement is the code for a cast crank.

J440 is a 1973 cast crank engine. The X+ M Cross means the crankshaft is .010 undersized. The other numbers probably signify the assembly/installation date of the engine...Dec, 21, 1972.

I'm thinking the same thing - that casting number doesn't go with that stamping. Is there something I'm missing?

I was looking on the driver side for the VIN. I'll have to look on the passenger side tomorrow

To me, the casting number betrays the fact that the E440, HP & 3 23 stamping has been added.  Besides that, the HP is in the wrong location from where I've seen almost all '69 ID pads.  There are a couple of other clues too that point to a re-stamp as well.

My guess is that someone wanted to make the ID pad (which is visible from the top) match their car's Fender Tag, but did so on a later-vintage block.  I wouldn't get too upset about it unless someone paid big money for the car/engine thinking it was a '69 HP block -- or worse yet, if someone was told it was a numbers-matching car.

under it is this 12 21 2.

The "2" after 12 21 on that J440 block only means second shift, and you can also conclude that it was a non-HP engine.

I checked the engine VIN and it is: 2C252186

the casting is shown in the pic. it looks like 72 in the top right corner.

the trans VIN is the same as engine VIN

It looks like it is a 73 block which is a 220hp or 275hp motor. What car was this motor originally from?

1972 model "C" body as that's what was built at the "C" plant.

Geno caught it. Look where the HP stamp is.

On your block it follows the displacement instead of the date. Sorry to be a part of the discovery

I knew that it was the wrong block for the car when I bought it....I just didnt know what year it was from. The price I paid for the car reflected the incorrect block. No worries....I was just trying to find out what motor it was.

Maybe NOT. If anyone is, or more pissed off about this news, it's ME. I paid a bundle more than I should have for this car prior to 69CF.

I only wish in hindsight I had done half the research 69CF has done PRIOR to me buying it. Unfortunately, I went on 'faith', and that has worked out only ONCE in my favor after 3 muscle cars.

Perhaps. Or, I may not have asked enough questions? I believe in honesty, and everything I told 69CF was based on what I knew, and that was based on what I was told. Actually, there were a few 'other' things that showed up when she was delivered that didn't jive with what I was told, but hey.....live and learn...and of course I was upfront with CF69 on 'those' issues.

My point was and still is, don't you assume, by asking the question you did, that I was a "crook".

Yes, I bought the car from him and this is the last post I will make regarding that. It's 69CF's car now, and while I'm upset about what he found out, I am a bit pissed at both BK and myself.

Why don't you define 'honest' and maybe I'll pursue this conversation? You see, to me being honest is being upfront on everything, and I honestly don't feel he was.

If he's a friend, sorry, and if not, hey.....I'm just telling it like it was.
