Air intake opinions (cool air intake stuff)

I've got one of the traditional circle-style air cleaners on my car right now, but I was goofing around and stumbled on this:

Which would allow me to run my intake down to the underside of the front of my car, getting much cooler air...  Cold air intake, basically...  But I wanted to get some opinions...

1) does it really make much difference?  I mean, the air above my engine is honestly VERY hot; 140 or so probably.  440s generate some HEAT!  So taking in air 40-50 degrees cooler sounds like it would be a no brainer.  But then the system routes the air through the engine compartment for quite a way anyway, so I know it's gotta pick up a good bit of heat there.  Is there enough of a difference in temps to bother with?

2) If so, great, I'll go for it!  But can I improve upon it?  For example, would insulating the intake hose help quite a bit, and if so, can it be done in a way that doesn't actually looks like crap-on-a-stick? :)

3) Finally, I wanted to look around a bit and see what other options there were for the same thing, but I couldn't find ANYTHING else.  I like auto-nomics, so I'd probably end up getting the stuff there anyway... but I'd like to see what else there is.  Does anybody else sell a setup like that to bolt onto 4-bbl carbs?

Thanks!

I was going to fab up something just like you are trying to do.  I was thinking about a fuel injection setup from like a Jeep Cherokee if it fits.  You would need something not too tall, and angled fitting for the hose.  I think chevy trucks had one like that too.  Just have to see which one is the same size diameter.

Let us know how the auto-nomics works if you go that route.

here's another option, actually alot of choices here...

I'm thinking of it too... ;D

Yes, a good fresh air intake is very worthwhile.

Take a look at the factory setups from the late 70s even.  There's a short, flexible hose that connects the air cleaner to some hard ducting that is routed through the feder to the front of the car.

Yeah, I'll definitely keep this on my to do list...  just got knocked down a few notches by the oil pump issues I'm having, though :(

defiance

Eh, stupid oil pump won't be in 'til next week  :icon_smile_angry: so I had some time to put the pluming together today :)

Basically it's just PVC wrapped in insulation, then wrapped again with duct tape.  Still trying to think of a good way to make it look better, but function first, then appearance :)

I just ordered the actual intake piece, I'll give thoughts later...  But I expect this should give me a good 40*+ air temp drop.  Plus, my air temp sensor is no longer mounted in metal, and is entirely insulated from engine heat, so it should also be a LOT more accurate (less heat soak)

Ok - got my oil pump fixed, so I'm back to this :)

Got the plenum in yesterday.  The lower tube is nearly 3" tall  ??? ... With the bulge hood it closes, but it seems like it might be 'bumping' - makes me nervous about closing the hood too quickly, so I'm going to shave it down about halfway.  I should be able to get it in this evening easy.  Then I can warm it up and see what kind of temps I'm getting! :)

I hope to eventually get this car on a dyno, and when I do I'll swap out for the old air cleaner and do another run - after the engine is warmed up - to see if I can document how much difference it made :)

Now...  to figure out how to make it LOOK good... :P

Yeah, I finished it up & got it functioning.  Seems to work pretty well.  I'm doing a dyno tuning session tomorrow, and I'll see what the result is... unfortunately, I have nothing to compare it to, since it never got dyno'd with the normal breather, but if I've got time (dyno time is EXPENSIVE), I'll try to put the old one on and make a quick run for comparison.  NO promises.
Looked like this in the SEMI-end, though.
I still plan to do some visual touch-up.  Probably find some currogated air hose to wrap around the insulated portion.  Not a priority, though; It's not a show car :)

Charger74

WIsh I had a picture of it, but saw a setup that really got me impressed and wanting to to it on my Charger when it is time.  The builder had a 2 x 4 setup on his engine.  He took the carb tops from what looks like The SuperCharger Store, built a custom 2 in 1 tube to run from the carbs to the radiator support and then had the air filter in front like you have.  Was a very clean install.  Nothing flexible and the Stainless tube was probably 2" - 3" inches in diameter.   Looked really good.  Actually had been thinking about this for a long time.  Somebody beat me too it though.....

I think I saw it in a Mopar mag.  Will have to look and see if I can find it this weekend...
