This was cool, this octopus nabbed the guy's jig in open water, then he pulled it in and someone had a salmon net for pulling up caught salmon onto the dock, which is a way's up from the water.   The net guy said he guessed this thing weighed maybe 50 pounds.
It took four of us pulling on the thing to get it back off the dock.  It was pretty strong and the suction cups were sticking to the dock pretty well.   Also one of those things sucked onto my hand for a second, stung for an hour after maybe, but was sort of cool to see the thing and try to get it back into water to save it.   Largest octopus in world live in Puget Sound, which is the body of water Seattle is on.   They get to about fifteen feet and live over a hundred something years.     The pic of me and salmon is to show where the dock is, that pic is a couple years old, the octopus pics are from yesterday with my cell phone camera.

I guess FRESH salmon would make up some for the wet weather in Seattle.

Whoa, that is a trip, the octopus catches and wrestles a big shark!

That first link in there doesn't work, but farther down the page this one opens the octopus vs. shark link:   thanks for posting that.

Pretty crazy... You guys get it back in the wateR?

Yup.  It was out of the water maybe ten minutes, didn't seem to bother it, it looked pissed though, and maybe four of us had to keep pulling on his stuck legs pretty hard, it didn't want to move.  Eventually we got it under the railing and it did a sort of harsh looking unside down flat landing, looked like it hurt!, then it shot a bunch of orange ink in the water (thought it was supposed to be black ink?) and was gone.    Some people (lot of Asian guys there) were saying, keep it, eat it, a lot were saying just let it go, but some old timer Asian man said when they are that old, maybe 100, and big, they aren't good eating, too tough.   Some people said they should have taken it to China Town in Seattle and sold it for a nice chunk of change, maybe to a fancy big restaurant, and they would have had it as a special on their menu for a week or two, I don't know.   I bet someone would have wanted it.  But it was sort of harsh to think of killing the thing.  How do you kill it?  stab a knive in its head?   let it sit there til it dies?    Was better to let it go IMO.  (more pics)

That shark vs. octopus link down the page, I didn't listen to audio first time, that is IN the Seattle Aquarium, says they couldn't figure out why the sharks in the tank were disappearing, so some guy stayed late at night with a camera, heh,

ps.  I didn't catch that, some old guy did, I was just lucky to be there at the time and see it, and had my camera phone with me.

I've often felt octopus and whales are the intelligent life we are seeking in space. We're just looking in the wrong direction. Imagine what we could learn if we were to invest in underwater exploration half of what we invest in exploring other worlds.
Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.
