finally painted,69 B5 R/T

It has been ready for over a month,but pouring rain every freakin friday I tried to bring it there stopped me,(the inside of trunk and trunk lid,floor pans,jambs on doors,hinge area,inside of fenders,and frame rails were already painted at my place),everything else to be painted in booth.Friday night I brought the car to my friends shop,sat did all the taping and painted the tail panel.Sun morning painted the engine bay.Mon night did the base coat,(had it preped to open doors and trunk to paint jambs with car not to get overspray and tape lines).Tues night did the clear.Tried to bring home tonight,POURING FREAKIN RAIN !!!! Bringing back to my shop tommorow.The  car was sealed with a blue sealer and grey sealer mixed together to get close to the B5 color,base coated with PPG DBC code 2019,cleared with PPG GLOBAL D894.(the same as 2021,just a different mixing ratio).Now I will start the cutting and buffing,post more pics later.Here are some pics as I went ......

Thanks alot guys,for those that are going to spray their car this color,this color really fools with your eyes.At one angle it looks grey-blue,at another it looks blueish-silver.But when you see it outside ,B5 all the way !!!!This  is a poor hiding color,(most of these light blues are),that is why I have been saying if you are going to do this color,try to put it over a medium blue sealer.Basically try to get the base to hide faster,and get as close to the color to be,so that you achieve the full effect of how the color is meant to look.I brought the car home this morning,and took a few more pics because it will be a little while before it goes outside again.Here are a few more to see how it looks outside,it was a little cloudy with the sun trying to break thru.It is hard because how I set my digi camera can change what it appears like in the post as opposed to what it looks like in person.But you will get the idea.

Perfect example of what I am saying about his color,look at the last pic of the front.Where the headlight area of the fender is bolted up to the radiator support,in the pic it appears to be different,but it is not.The engine bay and headlight area were painted at the same time,it is just the angle of the fender up against the flat of the radiator support,and because there is pearl in the formula,thats what causes this.Another funny,I was nervous about one of the caster wheels breaking during transport,and the car falling down onto the fender.So I stuffed a spare grand national wheel and tire under the unistrut crossmember jig that is there.

Thats correct tantop,that is why I had the hood down near the fenders during the base coat.Alot of people will paint their car in pieces at different times,thinking because it comes out of the same gallon they are  safe.This is not true,different air pressure,number of coats,temp of reducer,etc.,many factors hear come into play.Especially a color like this.On that show wrecks to riches,the 71 gtx they made,they painted with HOK purple candy,AT DIFFERENT TIMES,and if you look close you can see right off your TV that the hood does not match the fender and both do not match the door!!!!If you are doing a solid color b/c or solid color in single stage like black,red ,yellow,and so on you should be fine.Yes,I did paint my engine bay the day before the outside,but I tried to copy exactly everything I did so it would match to the above side of cowl.It ended up coming out right on,and even when you look down at the top of the fender and into the engine bay where the fender tag goes,it matched perfectly.Thank god!!!Also just to add,I had two gallons of base coat for this car,I only am left with about a quart.So,tantop,not only is it your two cents,but mine as well!!! Oh yeah,also on wrecks to riches,they did another car that they painted in pieces,did not match and Barry made the guy paint those pieces again.

yeah you often see metallic paint jobs like a checker board looking at them on the angle in natural or artificial light .i  use to explain this to the new guys learning to paint ,that by painting metallic base coat  panel  by panel off the car it will never match ,because the way the base coat falls when cross coating, angle of the gun  and  or mist( drop ) coat ,(depends on witch paint manufacture used) it will always lay different , of course the darker color the less visible it is to the untrained eye. just like you see alot of hoods &  and large flat panels , looking  patchy ( cloudy) ,stripey where the base coat has been sprayed at the wrong temperature ( to hot) wrong  thinners ( fast) pressure  etc,  did you use water base or solvent ,i say this because once you use water base i doubt you will want to go back to solvent. much much easier doing re paints in base coat it stays open ( wet ) longer , especially if you turn the air flow down a bit on the  booth , it is ideal for re painting a light metallic charger with out a vinyl top.              i used nearly 2 1/2  gallons useing a hvlp gun to do  my  69  3:1: 10%   single stage solid  over a colored primer that was the intire body in side out upside down etc.

tantop,no I have not used the water based base coat yet,have seen it,but never tried.My friend ,which is a rep for PPG showed it to me at their training facility,weird looking bottles.He also told me I would be suprized if I tried it.
