Wood grain steering wheel repair

Any recommendations? also, from what I've read the fill the crack, paint and texture...what's to prevent of from cracking somewhere else?

I will be following along as I picked up a wood grain wheel this summer for my 70 and it has 4 cracks that need to be fixed  One crack at each spoke and one dead center at the top
