Hi, my engine was stored dissassembled at auto shop school for five months, it had already been cleaned at a machine shop, was spotless,  no rust go on it at school, then had it in back of truck a couple weeks, awaiting ride to machine shop, had to change plans, didn't know the van had some moisture in it, just removed it into my garage, but . . .  did I hurt it much?   should I sand this off?  I mean sand it before I put some kind of oil on it for storage a while longer?  what kind of oil do I put on it?    any advice appreciated, thank you, Nate

Also the crank got rust on it  :-\   I can't believe how fast this rust started, was fine until it rained this week, thought the Honda Odyssey mini van seemed totally dry inside, it evidently did have some moisture in it, dang it.

it can be polished off but do it now before the rust gets deeper , Iron / steel takess 11 seconds to start rusting if unprotected

derailed

chances are its probably just stained metal discolored from the rust. Crank journals should polish up ok with some #600 grit emery cloth lightly and then hit it with wd40.

Hi, thanks all for the responses.      When I went to buy the emry cloth, 600 and 1000, the guy helping me was into cars and building engines, he recommended this CORROSION X stuff, was kind of spendy, but you spray it on before you sand and it will help dissolve it and stop it and protect it for storing, so I covered everything in this stuff.    The engine and heads seem fine, it is mostly the crank that was scary looking, the crank I will prob. have to sand on a little.
Here's a pic of it now right after spraying, I will see what it does and sand on it tomorrow, thank you.

Ok, that only took all day, JK, I used the #600 emry cloth, (before and after pics)  you guys were right, the #1500 I tried first wouldn't do it. The corrosionX stuff sat on it overnight, rust came off fairly easily, just took a while to get around all of it.   Now I am out of the corrosionX stuff, that little can was almost ten bucks.   I heard the WD-40 can get gummy on there after a while, but I have some of that laying around, can I clean that off later when I take it to the machine shop?   Anyone had this issue? Thank you.
