68 charger slant six production numbers???f

I've got a 68 slant-six, automatic, column shift Charger with just over 15000 original miles on it.  It was wrecked in 1971 - hit from behind and shoved into a guardrail.  After that it was stored, parked, passed around, until I bought it about 18 years ago.  I stored it inside, but the damage had never been fixed.  I've collected what I need to fix (floors, quarters, fender, etc. - mostly just wreck damage and rust - everything else was there - complete original car.  I actually got it running right after I got it back then, and started it again today after sitting for 18 years - still purrs!!!  There wasn't a lot of info back when I got it for production numbers, and I recently read an article that said only 2 slant sixes were column shifted - which got me interested again since I have one.  Hard to believe I may be that lucky.

Anyway, I know that numbers aren't exact and unicorns keep popping up that should never have been built, but I'd like an approximation of exactly how rare this car may be.  Any help is appreciated - thanks.

PS- It's not for sale - I saved it because I knew it was unusual, and I like it.

The very first Charger I ever bought was back in 1981
Not knowing anything about Chargers at the time
Was a bunch of 440 parts in the trunk
Turned out is was a factory slant 6 car by the ownership numbers ( still have the ownership sitting beside my desk )
It had a factory floor shift set up in it when I got it but the wrong seats ( they were out of a Chrysler 300 )
So think it was a factory floor shift car but who knows
Very rotten car and just ended up using it for parts for another 68 I bought later then drove

I believe the super low production number is for column shift 3-speed MANUAL cars, not automatics like yours.

Sorry I don't have the totals on hand.... this is just from memory.

I agree. The column shifted 3 speed manual transmission has got to be included in almost every discussion in regards to rarity no matter the engine.

Chris Birdsong had a slant 6 Charger with a 3 speed manual.
He sold it after a couple of months because he hated that he was getting passed by school busses and Geo Metros.😄

My 68 was a slant 6 with the automatic. But when I bought it it had a 440 like most. I thought about putting it back to a 6 but it didn't make sense to do so with out a numbers matching engine. And everything being set up for the 440. I did always wonder how many were built autos or manuals.

That seems right in the numbers. I looked all that up when I bought mine. And I doubt that they were too popular back then. That is a lot of car for a 6 banger.

That looks great! Manual steering and brakes to be expected.

My former WH 74 slant 6 Charger had PS, PDB, and 3 speed wiper which I thought was curious. If yer gunna go cheap.... why not go all the way?

Power steering pump is still attached to the mounting bracket

Take these with a grain of salt. First column in 2nd and 3rd attachments is sales code, 2nd is the supposed percentage of total cars and the last column is the supposed number of cars. The number 395 for automatic cars mentioned earlier seems a bit too coincidental with the sales code 395 for an auto trans. The one attachment shows one car with a manual but others have mentioned more, so obviously no definitive answer. Do you have a fender tag or broadcast sheet you could post?

that picture you copied and posted out of the white book is very old....there have been a lot more 6cyl cars found & verified with the 3spd manual transmission

Looks to me like he was being honest about the numbers.

Interesting that the Options and Accessories report shows 100% of Slant 6 Chargers came with Automatic transmissions. This report is only for US deliveries. I wonder if the handful of manual trans cars were Canadian and Export models?

the available 1968 Charger OPTION & ACCESSORY report is in ERROR for the Chargers with manual transmissions

1968 Charger = 96,108 TOTAL
02.4% 3-speed manual = 2,307 (225 & 318)
07.2% 4-speed manual = 6,920 (383 2bbl, 383 4bbl, 440HP & HEMI)
90.4% automatic (904/727) = 86,882 (all engines)

So glad I got rid of that wimpy slant 6 3speed 68 charger...needed 5 leaf blowers strapped to the back to help get up hills

Cool car indeed!

I was going to buy a 69 six-pot Charger back in 2004.

I regret not getting it now a it was UBER-COOL!!!

I would fake her up as an R/T and lift the hood at Shows and say its half a V12 lol... :idiot:

I agree. I had two cross my path at the same time. One still on the road in the Brunswick Maine area, another not on the road in southern Massachusetts that was rotted, but complete. I almost bought the one still on the road. Then years later I had one more that already had a 8 cylinder swapped in. I figured out it was a 6 when decoding.

Off topic a bit but last October I saw a slant six 1970 Charger 500. I didn't know that the slanty was even offered in a 500 model.
