The Ghoul

Ok, I was talking to chargerkid the other day and he got this mystified WTF look on his face when I explained this all to him.. So, I figured you guys would get a kick out of it as well.

I own a 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. That is a naturally aspirated 2.5L boxter 4 cylinder. I am in the process of collecting all the parts to upgrade to a turbo set up.

Well, my car has about 111,000 miles on it and the brakes are very warn and pulsate when you step on the peddle. That and make a lot of noise! So my conclusion was time to replace and upgrade.

I picked up the wrx front rotors and legacy rear rotors and caliper relocation brackets to accommodate. I then decided that I wanted stainless steel braded brake lines to give the peddle a stiffer feel.

This is where it starts to snowball.
The rotors I ordered had red centers in the pictures and look clean and nice so I assumed they were powder coated. When they arrived they had red spray painted centers that look like crap. The caliper hangers are unfinished cast iron, and the calipers are very oxidized. So I thought, why not have them all powder coated to give them a good uniform look and have them resist corrosion again in the future.

I thought, in order to powder coat the calapers I have to take all the rubber out of them and mask off the bits I don't want powder coat on. So if I have them apart already I might as well find the caliper rebuild kits on-line. Where I found the rebuild kits also had e-brake shoes so I did that as well.

I then started to think 'I'm going to have these nice rotors, calipers, and hangers riding on rusty old nasty knuckles, hubs, and tirods. So I picked up some por-15 for those.

I started asking around and it turns out one of the guys at my work used to work in a shop that does powder and ceramic coating. He said that there is usually a minimum order on powder coating and that I was better off doing it my self.

I jumped on line and picked up a powder coating system and red powder.

I then started to think about it and realized that baking powder coating in my moms oven might not be such a good idea. So a quick look on cregslist.org found me a cheap electric oven in my area.

Now that I had all the fixings to do this I again thought about where I would do this work. I have in the past sandblasted and painted bits outside without too much difficulty but sence I nolonger have a line on free sand, and powder can be reclamed and reused and is pricy I thought it would be a good time to set up a temporary booth system in my garage.

I went out to lowes and picked up a 400ft roll of 9ft wide clear bisqueen, 2x4's, 1x2's, and nails.

I started thinking once again about the logistics of the whole thing and realized I need to some how hang the parts on the rack, sand blast them, powder coat them, then get them in the oven , and then get them out and let them cool. So I basically needed 2 racks that will hold the oven racks in the air (one for the blast/spray booth and one for them to cool on). So I go to a local scrap yard and find the right metal I need to make that happen.

Now about 2 months later I have all the stuff gathered up and ready to go. All I need to do now is set up the booth, wire in the oven, and get to work.

Here is the list of the components and prices for the standard Impreza brake job.
Front brake pads   $50
Rear brake pads    $50
Front brake rotors $25
Rear brake rotors  $25
                                  Total $150
Here is the list of the components and prices for what I am doing.
wrx caliper hanger front             $ 120
h6 legacy caliper hanger rear      $ 120
wrx cross drilled front rotors       $ 90
legacy cross drilled rear rotors     $ 90
93-01 impreza goodridge ss lines $ 115
Redstuff front brake pads          $ 89.95
Redstuff rear brake pads            $ 79.95
front Caliper rebuild kit               $ 20.90
rear Caliper rebuild kit                $ 18.66
e-brake shoes                          $ 51.74
Chicago powder coat system      $ 90.09
Black por-15 pint                       $ 27.95
2lb. Carmine red 80% powder     $ 18.09
Oven                                       $ 75
Bisqueen                                  $ 17.97
2x4's                                       $ 11.88
1x2's                                       $ 6.79
Nails                                        $ 1.69
Scrap metal                              $ 30
oven plug                                $ 5.96
                                                           Total $1081.62  :'(
My only consolation to this whole mess is that after it is all said and done I will have better than stock braking and I will have the facilities to sand blast and powder coat any thing I want that fits into a standard oven. That means all the brackets and stuff for my charger I can do in any color I want. Also the booth I have planned will be big enough for me to spray a car and also I will be able to reclaim any powder or sand that hits the floor.

I will post up pictures of the booth and the parts as I do them.

I have never had issues justifying spending money on school or tools.
I am still  just amazed what a can of worms was opened from just a simple parts swap!

topduarte

I know exactly where you are coming from.

Bought my complete 440 with 727 and decided to upgrade various parts.

Had to get a new bib block power steering pump and brackets ($38 and $40), Decided to go with the original look so I am looking for an original mopar battery ($150 plus shipping plus need to buy acid), bought me a engine hoist for $160, decided to take all the engine wiring out and paing the engine bay, decided to replace the front bushings and bought a kit from PST ($329 shipped).

Wife is wondering when it will stop (probably never)

Oh well, it is just money right??? ???

How is the car stopping now after two months of procurement and procrastination? :icon_smile_question:

ask me in 2 weeks
LOL
That's just what my issue was with this whole project. Car is a manual so I am not too hard on the brakes and I have been babying the thing for the last two months but its still a little rattling when ever I have to brake hard.

After relying on the trans and clutch to slow the car for these months I shudder to think what you are going to spend on those upgrades. :icon_smile_big:

But I recall you were trying to build some kind of home rotisserie for your car from an old erector set & a lazy susan from your mom's kitchen cabinet?  :D

Just about.
That's next on the to do list.
I'm either going to barrow a real rotisserie from charger kit, or go with the 4x4 set up some one posted a while back.
Depends on if he has one up for grabs at the time or not.
To upgrade the clutch and the flywheel will run $875.
Not much room for improvement there, but again something that has to be done before the turbo system goes in.

Welp...

For 1070 bucks you could have bought one of US Car Tool's AWESOME rotisseries PLUS a set of brake pads for the Impreza that will never increase in value.

Just a thought.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

Or he could have bought more stuff for his charger. The rotissery sounds like another waste of money but its Ghouls $ so oh well.

every one knows that my charger is a slow custom build for me and me alone. so what ev.
all the stuff I do to the Subaru isn't to increase the value.. god I'm sick of that.. I hate when people can only see things as an investment. Its not about value at all, its the end goal of what I will do with the car. One day it will be a dedicated race car for fun at the track. More stuff I do along those lines little by little the less I will have to do when that day comes.
