Mystery Factory parts under carpet what are they??

Under the factory original carpet I discovered these "things" They look like little rubber caps and I'm convinced they were left over from original assembly on May 8th 1970. Any idea what they are?

they look like paint mask plugs

not sure where they were used, maybe for the riv-nuts for the side view mirrors - so the threads wouldn't get clogged with paint   :shruggy:   or similar

- Ear plugs - Good guess but way too big
- Some kind of thread cap is Plausable, some did some some Burnt Orange over spray

I'm going with thread caps/paint plugs as well, we use the same type of parts today for masking critical areas during chrome plating, powdercoating etc.

I think have seen some small rubber plugs somewhere into my firewall... for some unused holes maybe... damn! 7 years without my car on the roads is too much!!!!!

Small plastic retainers that slide over the mounting posts holding some nameplates to the car?
