It may be the company I keep, but it looks like the prices for E bodies are falling and the prices for the 2nd and 3rd Gen Chargers are rising, Seems like people are asking big money for Chargers needing a lot of work.

Here's more news.
Michael Jackson is dead too.   :smilielol:
The High end Hemi E bodies still seem to be valued at crazy amounts but I do agree that Charger prices are crazy and getting worse.

IMO the 2nd-gens have always been the most wanted Mopar, not counting VIN number collectibility.  I don't know why this was ever in debate.

I think it's partly because the mainstream classic car world (GM/Ford people) can't imagine such a large model being the most collectible.  There's a smaller Mopar version (E-bodies) with the same drivetrains and even wilder appearance options.

When you compare the brands in terms of size and original price/market position, the GM version of a Charger is a Monte Carlo, or Pontiac LeMans, or Olds Cutlass Supreme.  The Ford version is a Torino or Mercury Cyclone.  GM/Ford guys cannot imagine one of those cars being more popular than a Chevelle, Camaro, Firebird, Mercury Cougar, fastback Mustang, etc.

The rules are different with Mopars.  There was never a really popular ponycar on the compact A-body platform (at least not in North America.)  But a 17-foot-long Charger can look awesome and weigh 3700 lbs and be stiff enough to handle well.

I never understood the E body thing.   Anicdotily, I have noticed much less buzz about them.  Could it be because of the availability of new and improved Challengers?   I read an article recently that cited the abundance of new jeeps keeping a lid on the value of CJ5's and 7's relative to values of Broncos and Scouts.

Charger started life as Mopar's entry in the 2-door personal luxury car market
for 1966 consider it a "less-expensive" competition to Riviera, Toronado & Thunderbird - GM brought its "lower priced personal luxury car" competition in '69 with Grand Prix & in '70 with Monte Carlo

the popularity of the 2nd generation Charger is a perfect storm: its LOOK, NASCAR/NHRA track duties & the iconic "GENERAL LEE"

*** its LOOK - hard to debate its design & it's an everyman car from the peak of the collectable musclecar era
*** its use/success in many types of racing = a performance image
*** GENERAL LEE - made millions of fans when the cars were at their lowest value

I would think the big boat C-Body's were considered there Luxury Models.

I think he meant the 2 door, mid sized luxury coupe.

Some of the older car guys have been swayed into the new muscle car crowd.  Hard to argue with something that is as fast as the old ones and gets 20 mpg with the A/C on.

Slowly getting harder to find a good CJ, or even a 87-97 (?) Square headlight Wrangler.  All rusting away.  Or burning down.
Mopar forever!

IMO Hollywood's continuing use of 2nd-gens is a big factor.  The long term impact of Vin Diesel driving that '70 cannot be overstated.  That series has been going for almost 20 friggin' years now.

Bodystyles come in & out of fashion to some extent.  About 10-15 years ago there was a real high period for the E-body 'Cudas.

I have a 70 Charger and really love the body style, but I also really like the E-bodies.  I've considered getting an E-body as my 2nd muscle car but then I question why the hell would I spend 40 grand on a 50 year old car when I can get a new Challenger that looks very similar and is designed 10 times better with improved performance and reliability.

HANDM

I've got the best of all three a 70 Challenger a 69 Charger and an 18 Challenger T/A 5.7

Well, according to back-to-back drives with my dad... the Charger (probably any B-body) is just an easier and more comfortable car to drive. It also looks unique and awesome - whether stock, "day 2", drag car, auto-x, restomod, or customized. I love my E-bodies but nothing is like the Charger overall.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.
