73' Charger A/C pulley tensioner ? Is this needed?

On my 73' Rallye BB I am having issues with this tensioner. When I purchased the car 15 years ago it had this same style  flat tensioner puller. So I went to the local parts store and all they come up with is the same style tensioner.

All I can find is what seems to be the correct one for that year with a 2 groove V set up like I believe I would need.

Question is...do I even need this tensioner? From what I have seen sone SB and BB cars do not have them.

Just ditch the tensioner?

that is actually a late 74 setup I think... I'd like one for me since I hate the slapping belts when MY AC is on. The reason for it is the long distance between alt and compressor making to slap once the compressor clu¿tch is on and drags the system. This slapping on belts is able even to reach the radiator hose and cut it ( don't ask how I know it )

Small block are not a big problem becaus ethe distance is shorter.

The problem with this setup is the compressor bracket is diff too to provide the base for the iddler pulley, so is not easy to find the setup.

Needed? not really, Most of our cars doesn't have them but if you ask me and as I told, I'd like to have it on my car.

need to note I THINK your A/C hoses setup doesn't match the 73/74 as I know it. Front hose should go to passenger side, not driver side. This hose running to driver side is a pre 73 setup.

This iddler pulley in facts makes a bit diff this hose making the inline reservoir being far away from the compressor ( pic attached ), to give room for the pulley

Well worth keeping IMO, it's kinda scary to see how much the belts deflect in operation.

Nacho...wow...I am worried. My 73' is all #'s matching & I have the fender tags even. Do you think factory used parts from 71/72 on the A/C & the 74' tensioner pulley? Like I have mis-matched parts on there?

The A/C works , I just need a new blower motor.

Thank you Nacho !

I'm not really sure the belt iddler is juts a 74 thing ( or late 74 thing as I think, because I haven't seen it on ALL 74s ) just can say i just have seen it on some 74s, not sure had seen it on some others.

And the hoses set up... can't tell if some earliers 73s got the hoses like 71/72? But normally all 73/74 I have seen get both hoses running to passenger side. This makes also a diff condenser too to accept the hoses correctly. Aside the diff dryer location.

That is weird Nacho. Maybe was replaced by other owners? I suppose Mopar did some weird things at the factory and maybe used that year on mine... :scratchchin:

FWIW, the top idler pulley doesn't show up in any '73 FSM or parts book.

Ah...thank you man. That is weird. I had better check the numbers on my block & hope it does match. I know my fender gas, etc all checked out. maybe mine is a late build 73' that used 74' parts?

I think I may take it off. The belt wants to slip off the tensioner pulley at times.
