Does anyone know anything more about this car? Says it's original colors and has broadcast sheet/fender tag. I know it sold at Mecum Kissimmee in 2013 for $130K. $230k seems very high but not so astronomical that no one would have bought it by now if it were the real deal.? It's been for sale forever.

It's the only "legit" black 68 Hemi 4 speed that I know of. Interested if anyone has any info on how many 4 gear black 68 Hemis were produced and/or still known to exist today?

I can't afford it that's for sure but it's as close to my dream charger as I've ever seen. My real dream is a 68 4 speed J Code in BB1 Black MR Red interior with the buddy seat, black vinyl roof, stripe delete, with dog dish's/redlines. I wonder if that exists out there somewhere?

Anyways here's the link to the car. If I hit the Powerball it's the first thing I'm buying  :drool5:

Paragraph from the link:

Dealer Notes
1968 Dodge Hemi Charger 2 Door Sports Hardtop. NB black body paint, MR code red interior and S7 code transverse bumblebee tape stripe in white. Code 73 426ci 2-4 barrel 425 HP V8 Hemi head engine and an A833 4-speed manual transmission with Inland shifter. Original fender tag. Original broadcast sheet. Fender tag decoded by Gaylen Glovier. Beautiful frame-off rotisserie restoration. This is no toy, just a superfine example of a late 60's muscle car!

Frame-off restoration.  :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

Typical Chevy talk at its finest. LMAO

:Twocents: yes, $230K is too much money for a $150K Charger R/T

I know of 5 BLACK HEMI 4-speed '68 Charger R/Ts that still exist * "if" the 15K mile garage fire victim in PA still exists  :scratchchin:

surely there are more

6bblgt

also, his fender tag decoding * "NB black body paint" VS. PNT = BB1 (BLACK monotone paint style) & "MR code red interior" VS. TRM = C6R (Charger vinyl buckets RED)

is a bit "confused"  :eek2:

JackKeane

Lol I didn't catch the "frame off" bit. I've read the description quite a few times too and it never registered.

I was thinking MR didn't make sense for the interior color but I didn't bother breaking out the book to see what was correct.

Any details on those 5 68s you speak of? Any information and/or pictures to be found online? Do you mind if I ask where they are located and if they are in big collections/museums vs. a more typical owner that may have 1 to 3 hobby cars?

6bblgt- Very cool. That first car sounds very interesting in particular. Any clue what it had for wheels/tires originally and what the seating setup is up front? Could you share where it's located or details about the owner? Just the state and if it's in a big collection or not would be great to know. I'd love to get a VIN# to keep an eye out in the future. Feel free to Pm me if that's better.

I hope to god the second car is still surviving. How long ago was the fire?

I could see that black on red car pulling 200k today at Kissimmee Mecum. The prices are getting truly outrageous. What that Bengal Charger and the Silver 383 sold for was R/T 4 speed money not TOO long ago right? Not to mention the ridiculous estimate Mecum put on the Bengal which was obviously never going to happen. Curse (or blessing depending on if your in the market to buy or sell) of a strong economy. There are few cars I'd ever overpay for but that car is certainly one. A lot of these guys, who aren't in the business,  just buy what they want at those auctions and the price is of little overall concern to them. I go to Kissimmee Mecum and the West Palm BJ every year just to spectate and spend time with my stepdad who shares my passion for cars. A couple of years ago I was at BJ WPB and an elderly fellow in front of me, sitting with his elderly wife, paid what was considered an exorbitant amount for a 1940s convertible. After he beat the other bidder in the room and signed the buy sheet I leaned forward to ask how high he was willing to go for the car. He answered, very matter-of-factly, "Whatever it took. My wife really wanted it.". He didn't say it in a rude or cocky way.... but you could tell he genuinely meant it. He was a very nice guy and his wife was a lovely person as well so I was happy they had the means to get the car they clearly wanted regardless of what it was worth on the general market. Another time I was at the Mecum in Indianapolis and a fellow who was buying up nice cars like crazy starts bidding on this 2000s Chevy suburban. It looked like an everyday 2003 or so suburban but it had a huge supercharger. And it didn't go very cheap for something that looked like someone just slapped on in there garage. After he bought it I asked what else the truck had done to it to support the supercharger and what he thought it was worth since I assumed he was in the business based on his earlier purchases. He said he had no idea on both counts and that he didn't even know it existed until it started crossing the auction block. Then he said something like, "But doesn't it sound fun!?" And I suppose if it wasn't my money it did sound pretty fun haha! Some guys out there just have more money than they know what to do with and when they see something they want they buy it. God bless them if I were ever in the same position I probably would too with certain cars.

MrBrown562

I believe this is the #1 car. It is a column shift auto.

That's Allen's 68... Still has it and has had it for decades....

If there was ever  any chance I would own a Charger .
This one one be damn high on my wish list ( it would be higher if it were an auto )

For me personally, black with red interior is the  crem delecrem.

BUT,
A -Its WAY out of my budget
and
B- Chargers really dont pop my buttons like they do others here

Im more a Plymouth  B body guy

6bblgt

I thought I had the VIN info for the barn find R/T - there were lots of pics posted here on D-C when found and after fire  :shruggy:
#1 is not Allen's "xs29j8Bullitt" car

1968 "BB1" HEMI 4-speed Charger R/Ts:
#1 = XS29J8B141xxx = black, black interior, black vinyl top, stripe delete
#2 = XS29J8Bxxxxxx = black, black interior, black vinyl top, red stripe, 15K mile car in PA recently involved in a garage fire
#3 = XS29J8B266xxx = no tag info
#4 = XS29J8B370xxx = black, gold interior, stripe delete, old "WILDFIRE" racecar
#5 = XS29J8B375xxx = no tag info

about half of the '68 HEMI Charger R/Ts had body color wheels with hub caps - the other half had the "deluxe" 15" wheel covers & all had Goodyear SPEEDWAY F70-15 "red streaks"

MrBrown562

Do you have pictures or Vin of #1 car?

JackKeane

Mr Brown- check two posts up. He listed the Vin with all but the last 3 digits.

6bbl- thank you for that info. I'm guessing no chance on finding out where it is or what the owner is like? Do you have any idea how many owners it's had and how long the current owner has had it?

Daytona Enthusiast

There's a story on the car in the May 2007 issue of Musclecar Review page 86 titled " Four of a Kind" where it mentions fire damage.
I'd post it up for you, but my computer's down for the count, I'm using one at the library.

JackKeane

I'd love to get a read of that if you get a chance to upload it in the future. Thanks!
