I just learned that Dick Landy is supposed to be in Carlisle in July. That's not too far from me, I think I'll try to trailor the car up and see if I can get him to take a look at it.

I'd leave it right where it is and offer him a plane ticket instead.  A small investment (invitation to your home, plane ticket, put him up in a nice hotel for the night and treat him to a great steak dinner) would be wise move.

Good luck.

Maybe,if you can talk to Dick Landy at Carlsile, you can ask him if he could look at the car,and tell you if its one of his racecars. If he says he would go look at the car, then leave it where it is. If he says he would look it if it was there, then I would make an appointment, and then go get the car,and let him check it out for you. That way,you don\'t have to babysit it,the whole weekend, and he says no he wont look at the car. It may be more work driving it back and forth, but you wont have to worry the whole weekend that it may get damaged,or stolen. It would not be the first valuable Hemicar to be stolen from Carlsile. I think that would be your best bet,to get him to authenticate the car for you. Galen can confirm, that the car is a legit 70 Hemi Charger R/T,but only Dick Landy can confirm the cars pedigree. Wether you decide,to sell the car,or restore the car,the cars real value can only be confirmed by Landy.

MagnumCharger;

Thank you so much for your posting. I really appreciate the time, effort and interest you put into this. For me, you've blown this thing wide open. I was a little dismayed, but now I'm really encouraged. I think that's my car. I spoke with Dick Landy on the phone a few days ago, and he said he didn't remember having any '70 Chargers, "but that was a long time ago." The only thing that piqued his interest was the acid-dipped body. Other than that, the only thing he seemed interested in was getting off the phone. That's understandable. He's a very busy guy and says he gets several calls a week from people claiming to have "Landy Cars." It's got to be very annoying to him. I called him back Thursday and told him about your posting of the article with pictures that prove he had a '70 Charger. He was in a little less of a hurry this time and asked me to send him some pictures of the car. I asked if it would be okay to discuss this with him some more while he's at Carlisle, and he said that would be fine. I don't think I could ever get Landy to come to my house to see the car. He's much too busy and what's in it for him. I still wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to rent a space at Carlisle, tow the car up and try to have him look it over and maybe authenticate it. I have a friend with a towing company. I may be able to get the car up there on a rollback. This should help keep the car up out of harms way until Mr. Landy can check it out. I would, of course, clear all of this with Mr. Landy first. MagnumCharger, again, thanks. Whatever the ultimate conclusion of this whole thing, you've played a big part. I originally bought this car and the Hemi to have my idea of the ultimate street car. I still hope to some day, but this car, I think, should be restored and preserved. I can't afford to do that. I, like most in our hobby, think these classic cars should be driven regularly, but this one was never intended for that. It's a unique collector car and should be kept that way. Thanks again to everyone for your advice and comments. I check the site regularly and enjoy all the postings. I plan to dig the car out some more this weekend to take photos for Dick Landy. I'll post some of them.

KEEP US POSTED.  Honestly, set up a time buy the guy a beer offer him something to look at the car.   YOU HAVE A GREAT CAR, and with it sounds like an interesting history......

Hope all turns out well.  Clean her up and take some photos out side. :icon_smile_cool:

Maybe you should contact Carlisle Productions and/or a magazine (Mopar Collectors Guide seems to thrive on this kind of story) and see about getting it put inside one of the pavilions for the weekend and try to arrange to have Landy authenticate it at some specific time with media coverage and determine in public if the car is legit.
If Landy gives a thumbs up, the car has been protected all weekend and it gets PLENTY of exposure for the best auction results (the Forgotten Landy Charger found in a barn and proven in a pavillion).
If Landy gives a thumbs down, the car has been protected all weekend and a genuine Hemi car gets plenty of exposure (missing Landy Charger turns out to be real Hemi but a bust).
Either way, you can't lose.

Okay guys, it's not official, but I think it's definate. We were taking photos of the car, and my wife noticed that Dick Landy's name could be seen very faded on the doors. You can probably see it in the photos. I think the car had been passed on a few times after Landy was finished with it. I guess one of the subsequent owners removed his name from the car, or maybe D.L.I. removed the lettering before they gave up the car. Fortunately, the lettering wasn't thoroughly removed. The door had been relettered lower down. This writing is also faded, but appears to say PoorBoy. Some of the original decals or stickers may have been removed to make room for local sponsors. I hope all of this is enough to convince Landy to take a look at the car. Check out the pics. My son enhanced on eof them on the computer to make "Dick Landy" more legible.

Well, it seems legit just going by internet pics and I hope it turns out to be so.  It'd make for a great diecast and since I can't afford to buy it, a 70 Landy Charger would look great on the shelf beside the 68 and 69 versions that are already there.

myrt70

That sure looks like the real deal. I think once Dick sees that car,he will confirm, that its one of his cars. I would keep that car,and restore it. The car is a rare peice of history, that you preserved all those years. That may very well be the coolest 70 Charger there is! You will regret selling that one!

I think I can shed a bit more information on this car, courtesy of the same magazine I had found earlier.
In it, there's an article about an NHRA event at Dallas International Motor Speedway. This is a September issue of Super Stock magazine.
You can see a picture of Dick Landy watching this car being raced, from the sidelines. His driver was Bob Lambeck.
Here's a bit of the text describing the outcome of the event, with regards to the Charger's race that day.
And the aforementioned pic of Landy watching Lambeck.

Well, I didn't get an answer from Barrie Poole as to having any other pics of this race yet but the fact that John Elliott won makes me think they must have a bunch somewhere.
This thread along with the one about Landy's 68 Charger and the "Have I found Dutton Flats" thread have been my three favorites in along time. ;D ;D ;D

I guess the next thing would be to contact Bob Lambeck?

Uh, wow.  It's real easy to make out the Dodge on the 1/4 panel, too.  I love how vintage looking the wheels/tires are.  I wouldn't doubt that's an original DLi car now after the next round of pics.

If you ever put it up for sale, please let me know.  I'm a huge Dick Landy fan, and I'd be able to afford....oh, maybe one of the park lamp lenses.  :icon_smile_cool:

Absolutely NOT trying to stir something up and I think this is a great story, find.  But I was wondering, the left rosette on the VIN tag looks like it's more solid in the center than the right.
Is that due to it being caked full of crap from over the years?  Not trying to find something wrong, just comparing the two.  :icon_smile_cool:
I haven't read every other post and maybe someone's already mentioned it, if so, I apologize.

Ghoste

Sometimes part of the rivet "nail" will break off in the head of the rivet and not pull out after.  It looks though like it's just caked up with gunk to me.

472 R/T SE

OK, works for me & I'll remember that one  Like I said, not trying to find something wrong.  It just caught my eye, thanks.

Dodge Don

There is "something in it" for Dick Landy to take the time to authenticate the car.......the find will no doubt spin off multiple magazine articles which will, as a by-product, promote Dick Landy!!

He should be reminded of that fact and take a little time to look at one of his old race cars.
