Searching for a '68 Charger

MagnumMan68!

Hello all! I'm new to the forum and have a question. Many years ago I had a '68 Charger which saw me through college and early work days. Unfortunately, had to give it up when the '74 gas crunch came and gas prices jumped. Needed to look for something more economical to run at the time. Nostalgia has caught up with me and I would love to know if the car is still around. The VIN is XP29H8B236149. The car was originally code AA silver with black top and black interior. Picture is attached. I saw the car a year or so later and it had been repainted red. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

I think they used that car in season 2 of the Dukes of Hazzard.

45 years on, it was probably crushed and reincarnated as several different cars through the decades.

If you can let us know about what state/ town it was bought and Registered would help. Thanks

70 sublime

Thought that number looked familiar
Oh so close to the 68 I have here in Ontario

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search.

A lot of Chargers met their demise on the Dukes of Hazard (300+), most were '69's but some '68's as well. Tragic! I've considered the other possibility of the scrap yard too.

The car was originally delivered in the Bethesda/Silver Spring, Maryland area outside of Washington, D.C.  That's where I acquired it as third owner. I later moved to York, PA and that is where I lost track. Could still be in the mid-Atlantic or gone elsewhere of course.

Wow, that VIN is close!

If you have a police friend or a friend that has access to DMV records, maybe you could explain the situation and they could run the VIN number for you?  That's a good looking Charger.  Would be fun to track it down and bring it back home after all these years.  Good luck with your search.

Thank you for the note on the DMV records and good wishes. I have checked with DMV and the car has not been registered in PA for at least the past five years. Title records are purged from the on-line database if there is no activity for five years. Had to file an information request, waiting for a report. Looking for other search options.

Just out of curiosity, I'm down in Bethesda/SS area, did you buy it from a dealer?

I was living in Kensington at the time. No, I purchased the car privately. Not positive but, it may have been sold and delivered originally at Wheaton Dodge on Georgia Avenue. That location is now Fitzgerald Auto Mall.

Try 1968 dodge charger registry. I used the 1970 one and they knew where to gat my dealer invoice and they knew about the car.

I grew up in Bethesda and I worked for Fitzgerald's for 38 years. Wheaton Dodge was one of the stores I worked at in the 70's.

Small world! I bought this Charger in September 1970. Don't recall if I had any service done at Wheaton Dodge although I did go there for parts. My father and I used to do a lot of our own work on our cars.

To update the search I am adding the following info. I received a report from the Pennsylvania DOT that indicated a subsequent owner had the vehicle registered in PA for a period of time about 20 years or more ago. Unfortunately, that owner has passed away but I have information for a family member. Will be following up on that. Again, any other information would be appreciated. Best to all!

Still only one other 236*** sequence car in the registry.

Hmmm.   There is a silver 68 Charger here just outside Bel Air MD that is a 383 4 bbl with A/C and console.   Black interior.  It sits outside, has been repainted, and is getting a bit of rust.  The vinyl is curling off the C pillar and is hard enough to slick your arm off.  In other words, it will need a bit of work.  I spoke to the owner last year, he said he turned down 12,000.- for it.  But he's not doing anything with it.  I don't know the VIN.

How hard is it for these guys to do something simple like throw a tarp over it, jeez...

MagnumMan68!

Agreed, but then it can be harder to ID what treasure is hiding under the cover!

These machines need to be preserved.  Letting it rot out in the elements because someone keeps saying they'll get to it "someday " is asinine and should be a criminal offense...
