Power steering issues, hard to turn

Trying to my 68 charger runing.  When I bought, fitting on gear box was leaking and power steering pump was noisy and did not appear to be operating correct.  I installed a suppostly working rebuit pump (same early saginaw design) and fixed the leak.  Steering effort is still very firm, difficult.  With wheels lifted seems easy and smooth.  Just at a standstill its extremely difficult to turn.  You can with enough effort, but not what I would expect from a power steering car.  Its better with the new pump though.

What should I look for, gearbox problems?

Make sure you have worked all the air out of the system by turning the steering from lock to lock.   You should not see any bubbles in the fluid.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I think we have the air out.  Worked the steering whell back and forth while the front end was raised.  It did bubble and we kept adding more fluid untill it appeared to stop.  Maybe I should try again.  Any more ideas?

key words right there, are you 100% sure it's good.  isn't too much to that system.   last thing fixed, first thing broken..
if it is good is the sterring binding somewhere else idler arm, tie  rods is something bent under there maybe.  just my  :Twocents:

I am having the same problem as you have.BTW,does your steering wheel self centre,or do you have to help it back.
Thanks Adam.

Does not self center.  Mike has me thinking about the other pieces, maybe the tie rods.  Not sure how you can visually tell without knowing what to look for.

I know it's a pain, but the way i elliminated any tight steering components, was to dissconnect drag link, (pitman arm) from centre link & turn the wheels from lock to lock & see if you have any issues, like anything binding, tight etc. Also if you have pulled or dropped steering columb, you may want to check all bolts (three) are tight & in line,as this can put undue pressure on coupling & cause tight steering.Good luck Adam.
