Found the casting number on my 8 3/4 when it was pulled for my Daytona restoration it's 2881489. Can I tell the gear ratio and if it's a sure grip ?

Thanks

Gear ratio will be id'd by a little metal tag bolted to center section.

There are few problems in life that cannot be solved with C-4.

All that casting number tells you is that this is a "489" case.  Gear ratio is usually on a tag attached to one of the cover bolts.  Nothing will tell if it is a SG, you have to look inside.

Turn one drum on one side. If the other side turns in the same direction it's a Sure Grip. If it turns in the opposite direction it is not.

You're probably right, but I think they are lockers. In that case you could probably jam one side and turn the other. If it turns it's open, or busted, LOL. In my days of scrap yard hunting, I've had good luck with the method above. ... Eric.
