XP29H9 VIN engine and tranny match. Just repainted professionally and new Legendary top. Orange 383-4 335 HP engine. I think the tan top is rare. it is one of `9000 SEs and 4000 4-speeds. Has a 3.23 sure grip rear end.

p.s. see the limelight 20K mile superbird in the background of the second picture :)

Very cool.
I dig the og shifter w/ period t handle.
XP 383 4 speed cars are the ultimite factory made "sleeper" charger of its day.
Also they are more rare then a R/T 4 speed car.
I call them "roadrunner" chargers.
Its a unique club to be in.

Nice, welcome to the club, got a 69 S.E. 383-4 speed, A4, body, green guts & green top.

Nice ride.  :2thumbs:

Now, I had always thought that the 2nd generation (and 3rd generation?) Chargers did not get the 383-335 hp Magnum motor. Just the lower powered 330 HP Granny motor ( ;)). Being the original motor is there any documentation that it is a 335 HP beast? Would be nice again if there was.

Dan

Edit - the VIN is XS? Should have a 440, and THAT would be a Magnum.

The whole thing about the 383 Road Runner mill and the standard 383 4 barrel never made much sense to me. FIVE horsepower difference? Who is going to notice 5 HP? Even at a relatively light 3500 lbs, 5 HP makes no difference. A change of 5 psi of tire pressure is more effective. A difference of a passenger in the car makes more difference.

I'm confused, Are you saying it is a XS car with a H code 383, could be a misprint on the VIN tag, What does the Fender Tag or build sheet read?

Agreed that the advertised mere "5" HP seems trivial, nonetheless, that was merely "peak" hp irrespective of the averages throughout the power curve, and the rpm where that peak occurred.
make no mistake....
there was NO similarity in performance as the 5 hp would suggest, the 335 hp version could run circles around their 330 hp brethren.

Sorry, it is an XP car not XS. my typo.

His documentation from GG says it is the 335HP motor.

Still, an 1969 XP Charger could not be ordered with a 335 HP 383 - the only 383 available was the H code 330 HP 383 engine. It was simply not an option. No reason it couldn't have had the requisite changes to make it a 335 HP motor after delivery.

Gotta love our Mopar drama....  ;)

OK, I always thought the orange 383-4 was 335 and the turquoise one that went with A/C was 330 like my 68 H code car.

From Wiki:
The four barrel engine was rated at 330 hp and was identified by the "pie tin" on the air cleaner as "383 / FOUR BARREL". The 330-hp engine was unique to the Charger model in 1969. While this engine was available with an un-silenced air cleaner option, it differed internally from the 335-hp 383 "Magnum". In 1969 the B-series engines were all painted Chrysler Engine Turquoise with the exception of the 383 four speed, 440 Magnum, These engines were painted Chrysler High-Performance Orange. Differing from the 426 Hemi which was painted Street Hemi Orange. The 335-hp 383 Magnum engines were also painted Chrysler High-Performance Orange. The 383 Magnum motor was used in Road Runners and Super Bees, but did not appear in a Charger body until 1971.

In 68, the only 383-4 in a Charger was the 330 horse.
In 69, Chargers with a four speed and no a/c got the 335 horse. Any 69 383-4 B body with four speed (Satellite, Coronet 500, Charger) and no a/c got the 335 horse. This car appears to have the correct orange assembly.

Vin code H only tells you it's a 383-4. It does not tell you WHICH 383-4 the car received. The applications vary by year, body (A, B, C), transmission and a/c or not.

Several wrong sentences in there. The 335 horse automatics in RRs and SBs were orange. The 335 horse can be found in 69 and 70 Chargers.

Compare the HP rating of a 383-4 HP to its peers and see what you find.
Check the standard HP ratings on the, all larger CID, 400 GTO, the Chevy 396, the Ford 390 and the AMC 390.
Then, it will start to make sense.....at least to marketing folks.

Plus, at 335 horse, you are starting to encroach on the 440 375 rating.

Yep, I confirmed (if that is at all possible with dealership paperwork from back in the day) using the Dealer Data Book that the 1970 383 4-bbl motors were 335 HP Magnum's. But I don't see it in 1969 - they were still only 330 HP 4-bbl's according to the Dealer Data Book.

SHOCK Alert !
Hagerty are recording the largest 4 Month Price appreciation period in many many years on 2nd Gen Dodge Chargers, with an average 10% increase in 1969 Charger prices between Jan to May 2018 in Canada, with the #1 Cars recording the highest Sale price increases of 12-13% , #2 Cars next highest at 10-11% and so on....
Probably the same in the U.S. as the smaller Canadian market typically mirrors it's larger southern neighbors activity.

Can't blame the guy for "testing the waters" by pricing high with the current market trends ?
I suspect if he see's offers anywhere close to 65% of the $89K asking, say around $60K ?  then it would support the record paced rising Hagerty valuation data on a 2.5 condition example with the 15% "SE" premium and 20% 4-spd premium at $57.850.

BTW,
Nice car, I like the color options.

It's not something that can be ordered so it wouldn't be addressed in the data book.

There was no 330 horse manual transmission non a/c engine assembly for 69 so all B bodies with four speeds and no a/c got the 335 horse. This can be confirmed via the engine assembly number on broadcast sheets and a Lynch Road fender tag. You'll find the same engine assembly number on 69 RRs, SBs, Sport Satellites, Coronet 440s and Charger broadcast sheets.

The 70 applications are different than 69. What happened in 68 changed for 69 and changed again in 70.

Very few publications or on line sources get into the nuances of what assemblies actually came in what cars. It's too detailed and boring for most outlets to cover.
