Horrible news

So yeah,.. This is my first post here so Ill give you the quick run down. 1 year ago I picked up a 100% origina, numbers matchingl one owner 1969 Dodge Charger R/T  B7 blue/Black top, AT

Gave it a tune up and swaped out the gears last weekend and took it for a spin,.. The Tach stopped working and while I was getting on it out of no where a hudge explosionlike sound came from the transmission at the end of 3rd,.. I dont think I overrevved it or anything, but as soon as I pulled off tot he side of the road tranny fluild was pooring like blood. It hurt, it hurt alot... Im really paranoid that I may have ruined the housing/casting of the original tranny,...
any ideas?

its kinda weird,.. towing it home anything over 20 there is a slight vibration coming from the bellhousing area,.. im guessing mabey the stall blew up so the valve body gave out,. idunno.
anyone ever experience ANYthing like this?

Welcome to the club. :2thumbs:

I have also managed to detonate a 727 transmission. Lift the car up and take down the trans and check the damage. I don't think you managed to crack the housing, but the internals are surely busted up, the fluid leakage is probably cause the drive shaft sealing/bearing took a beating.. Have a good shop you trust rebuild the transmission...

Whats the big deal? I though you total the car when I read subject. Stuff like that happens, the engine is more important. Maybe the case is ok, craw under and look, if its is crack just get another one, keep the old case if you want to show people if you go to sell it. Won't drive any different. I total my very nice  1970 Cutlass when I was 22 and was in the hospital for 19 days. So you are lucky, all you need is a new trans and you are good to go. Cars and parts can be replace, people can't be.

didn't you post to another guy that wanted to trade his 71 chally for a 69 r/t.  if this is the same one you might want to tell him the tranny is shot, but i would never trade a 69 ch r/t for a challenger, just my :Twocents:
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I've destroyed a fair number of engines, transmissions, rear-ends, drive shafts, and u-joints over the years.  Not to mention the senseless tire damage that seemed to be associated with all of it.

well yeah your right, I honestly didnt think about it. Like I told him in the post Its not the car hes looking for he wants a 68 mines a 69,.. and obviously if the conversation went anyfarther than what it has this far id let him know.
Besides Im banking that the housing itself is ok, and just needs a rebuild,..

Sounds like Ghoste is a real hot rodder--way to go guy.  These people who have a 400 horse power car and then drive it like it a Yugo , I can't stand. Same with the dude with a new vette and won't even go 5 mph over the limit. Come on drive it like it was made to .

i had the same thing happen to me.  my tranny blew up so bad that the out put shaft came up through the floor and the housing broke right off the block.  my trans guy told me that it had something to do with third gear, i don't quite recall what he said, but at the end of this story, i gave him my jacked up housing and he built me another one for 700 bucks.  so, the moral of this stroy is the grass is greener on the other side.

thats the game we play,although i feel for you. i just got my dart sport,with a 440 in it back from paint job,all kinds of other mods,and bam, the drive shaft slipped out of the tranny or the tranny housing cracked goin 70 on a parkway,this is back in aug.05. i ended up facing the other way on the median. a tranny later new grille,fender,2 weld wheels,back taillight sec.frontend work later,i`m ready to rock again with a 550 hp.440,and i have my life luckily.

I thinkeveryone may be missing my point,..
Yeah Im glad im safe and it didnt turn out worse,..
but this is the original tranny,.. numbers matching.
If it is screwed,.. what would be my best option of maintaining resale value,.. replace itwith another 727, 4 spd, or mabey upgrade it with a 5-6 spd?

Myrtle, You have most likely split your trans housing in two. I had a front drive shaft u-joint cap come off and locked up my output shaft. I was going 105 MPH at the time. The explosion was humongus and the car seemed to jump off the ground. I split the trans housing completely in two. I also broke a new 10 inch converter, the valve body in two spots and my brand new aluminum trans pan cracked in two. the thing only had 200 miles on it. My numbers tranny is in my shed so I know how you must be thinking. I was mad enough. I very sure you cracked the housing in two. It happens. Most of us don't buy the car to sell it anyway.

Well I did get your point, thats why I said keep the old one so you could show that you had it but it just broke. If you want to make it worth the most I am not sure, the dealers who sell these cars would know. I have hear people who sand # off and restamp the old # but that is  not what you are thinking. Not sure who would know, I would think another trans just like you have. If its is very nice you will still get good money for it, just might take a little longer. A smart buyer will understand what happen. The engine is more important than the trans. I am sure the rich people are going to be putting in these truck overdrive trans very soon now with gas at $3.00. Maybe that is what you should do.

I agree with Dodge Freak. I was not trying to be mean when explaining it. I was just saying that you rode it hard and put it up wet. The engine is important. The trans will make you feel awful for awhile but you will fel fine when you get another trans in the car.

I don't know if I'm a real hot rodder or real stupid.  My car isn't numbers matching though and any drivetrain parts I've ruined in cars that were numbers matching were back before we knew or cared what that was.
I didn't understand the original meaning of the post so I apologize for that.  I think before you come to any conclusions you will need to pull it out and look at it.  It will have to come out any way.  The last time I made a 727 "bleed", I broke the tailstock extension into three pieces and bent the output shaft but the main case (where the numbers are stamped) was okay. 
You need to assess your real damage first and go from there.

YES I DID HAVE A LOOP ON IT. THE RUMBLING AND BANGIN MADE ME INSTANTLY TO HIT THE BRAKE CAUSING ME TO GO IN TO A SPIN FROM THE TRANNY FLUID.IF THAT HAPPENS AT THE TRACK I GUESS I WONT HIT THE BRAKES AND JUST RIDE IT OUT.PLEASE DONT RESPOND DONT WANT TO HIJACK THE THREAD.

Well are you going to drive it a lot.  Then replace it with a different tranny now.  Sell the car (if ever) with the #'s matching one.  That is a thought.

I have been in only one car that shattered the shell of the TRANNY

That was a 70 Chevelle SS that was going 135mph and droped the drive shaft from the rear,   (this is the first time I actually saw my life flash before my eyes.  SERIOUSLY.)

BTW it shattered it like an egg.

So myrtle, I may have missed it - when you got under the car and looked at the trans, what did you find?  I've had a similar-sounding vibration in my numbers-matching 69 R/T SE for quite a while now (at about 105 mph with 3:23 gears, and gets worse from there).  I have been delaying the fix, but a friend of mine told me a near-identical story to yours - he said he had the hammer down, the vibration came on, then stopped with a bang, with a huge cloud of smoke behind him.  In his case (and I think mine), the extension housing bushing was bad and the tail shaft housing broke off, dumping all the oil.  I'm not sure, but you may be able to replace the tailshaft housing and be back in the game if this is what happened.  Based on his story a few weeks ago, I have a different 727 apart now (my first rebuild) which I'll put in the car, then move the original trans safely into a storage mode in the garage - not like I'm selling this car, but if I'm going to frag a transmission, I'd rather it not be the original.  I have a bolt-in driveshaft loop just in case.  Now I need to finish a replacement engine to protect the original!  I'll see you at the track!  :2thumbs:
