440 External oil pickup/Line

I was wondering if anybody has any tips or suggestions on setting up a 440 with a single external oil line in a 68 Charger, manual steering:

- 440, .030 over. Hedman headers
- I have the Milodon 31581 oil pan, with a single static pickup, -12AN fitting
- I also have their 21814 oil pump and will use the 21215 cover also 12AN fitting

My plan is to plug the NPT internal pickup hole as per Milodon's instructions and from what I have heard of others doing. As far as I understand I don't need to do anything more with the internal pickup?

What I don't have yet is the oil line that will go from the pan to the pump cover.  Looks like all the Milodon kits have hoses that have straight fittings on both ends which doesn't seem to be ideal for hose routing.  I'm thinking of getting some Fragola series 2000 fittings (or any other brand I should go with?) and their hose and making my own.  It seems a 90º fitting on the pump cover end, and a 45º fitting on the pan side would make things easier?  I'm hoping that some one who has done this before might be able to advise on if this plan will work and how they routed the hose?  I've read that you want the hose to curve above the level of the pump to some extant so that it will "keep the pump primed."  Which kinda makes sense to me, but I've seen pictures where people apparently weren't worried about that.  Searching online hasn't provided me with these details I'm trying to find out.  Thanks for any help

1st question is why are you going external oil?
Past that, i have a 90° bend coming out of the pan that goes up to the oil pump, but on a stock framed car, the ears on the block and then the motor mount would be in the way. Its going to be very tight getting between the pan and k frame, not sure its going to fit, and if it does, for how long.

The answer to the first question is that I never had a chance to do any improvements I found suggested to the pickup side of the stock oiling system. I still have the 3/8" pickup and no modifications to the passages in the block. Second I have all these parts, except for the pickup line.

I also admit that I'm paranoid, because I spun a rod bearing last summer. And if I recall, I was told the clearances are a little looser on this assembly. I used to be the biggest cheerleader of how great the Hemi pan and high volume stock style oil system was great, and I still am, but I'm trying to help the engine all I can.

I totally see what you mean about being a tight fit, which makes me wonder how Milodon can sell those kits with lines they have in them. 90° on both ends or one 45° and one 90 degree end seems the best way to do it. You'd have to either be running the engine on a dyno only or using a motor plate to use the lines they provide. The pump cover is supposed to be for applications for cars using Wedge motor mounts. Eyeballing everything I think it'll work, but it is certainly a tight fit

That kit will work fine. I have the older style cast Milidon cover with an HV Melling pump using a dual line static pickup with a Charlies 12qt pan. The k-frame required a bit of trimming to clear the 90* oil pump fitting. Mine is using 90* fittings and it works great. Oil pressure is rock solid !  :2thumbs:

Here's a pic with the driver side motor mount and headers installed for mockup.  :scope:

Ron for the win!  :2thumbs:
- worth putting some heat wrap at the header by that oil line if this is going in a street car that sees idle time.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I think I'll route my line similarly and make some heat shields. I figured a little bit of trimming might be needed on the K-frame, thanks again
