742 suregrip to a 489 case???

Funny as of writing this on Sunday morning and watching Detroit Muscle, their building a 8.75. Cool. But I don't have their money to play with. lol

Anyway, I just picked up a 67' Charger  742 8.75 rear end with a sure grip. Clutch type.  Really good shape, oil still nice and clean after sitting in a field for the last 25 years. The series of questions I have are...
Since I'm not changing the gear ratio can I leave the pinion alone in my 489 case and simply change the ring gear from my old open differential to the sure grip differential? Then adjust backlash?
Another question...
All I have to do the change the sure grip to the 489 is make sure I use the original sure grip carrier bearings and races eh? Just install them in the original bearing caps.

Hope I'm not missing anything. Please let a fella know if I am.

Thanks
Out to the shop to clean up the old case and backing plates. Then take the sure grip off the 742 case. Wish me luck.

Carrier will fit with bearings and races, install your actual ring on it

You can remove the caps with adjuster in place and reinstall them just like it was. IT SHOULD match without any headache. If not, will be a good starting point for backslash recheck.

Yes I'm going to use my ring gear that goes with my pinion in my 489.  I tried to take the 742 apart like that but I didn't want to force it so I backed off the adjusters.
Thanks for the reply Nacho. I just checked out you 74 R/T build. Nice car for sure!
Congrats!

Keep the adjusters position on the 489 caps. The 742 doesn't matter. As I told should be fine or at least a good starting point ASSUMING the bearings are correctly fit the same on both carriers.

( sorry, I had a question sign about using the actual ring on my reply... just edited it )

My car is once again on a body job, way deeper than the other ones.

The adjusters provide preload for the carrier bearings which means they are under tension when installed.

The likely difference in the overall width of the two differentials mean both adjusters will need to be moved to set the preload/backlash.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
