I'd actually be impressed if these guys actually started using catch ramps and driving the car away instead of just chucking it up in the air and letting it come crashing back down.

Kinda breaks the illusion of theater when the General breaks into a million pieces upon landing, doesn't it?

Agreed.

Like come on guys, lets bring a little precision to the screen.

Have a catch ramp drive away and do a power turn with tires smoking for drive by.

I used to feel that way years ago.  But after seeing some of the early live GL jumps in person (and up close, not 70 yards away behind a NASCAR fence) I started feeling differently.

You can watch GL jumps on TV/youtube any time.  What's different about seeing them live is that the sheer mechanical violence ISN'T sanitized out of it.  You gain a whole new perspective on the TV footage.  Landing-ramped jumps are impressive in a different way but I think there's room for a few car-wrecking GL jumps now and then.  IMO you've missed out if you are a big 'Dukes' fan and you have never seen a huge car-smashing GL jump in person.

I would rather see them keep doing real car-wrecking jumps, but use some crap POS car like a Caprice Classic or Crown Vic.  The hours of bondo & patchwork on these GL stunts cars could be spent making some other car look a bit more like a '69 Charger.  It doesn't need to be that close.  Just use some sheetmetal & pop rivets to get it nearer to an overall Charger shape.  The orange GL uniform will do the rest.

These outfits that put on the jumps should try and get a sponsorship from AMD. Then all they would have to do is build a tube chassis and pop rivet all of the sheet metal onto the chassis...similar to a circle track car. They could even incorporate the push bar into the chassis to help protect the front end. Then they could jump, hammer, bondo, repint, etc. over and over until the panel is not usable anymore...then just rivet on a new AMD piece...
1968 Charger R/T, matching numbers 440/727, black with green top and interior, currently getting restored by me

Wouldn't a tube chassis bend after a NASTY jump like that?  :scratchchin: :shruggy: LEON.

Yes.

The crumpling unibody is the only thing absorbing the impact on a jump like this.  The wheels get slammed up into the chassis so hard that the springs/shocks might as well not even be there.

Even if you could get the suspension to resist more, and you could guarantee that the wheels would hit the ground first (not the front or rear body overhangs) there still isn't enough wheel-travel distance.  Stadium trucks use 24-36".  A Charger has about 7" in front and about 11" in back.  And then there's the tiny volume of air inside a 15x7" wheel's tire, which is not enough for this job even if you pump the pressure up pretty high . . .

You can make a jump-proof vehicle but it won't look anything like a '69 Charger.

Either the car absorbs the massive energy, or the driver does. Take your pick.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

$5900 is not its Dodge-Charger-raw-material-for-restoration value.  Jumped GLs have been selling pretty well as souvenirs ever since they started being jumped at live events.  This isn't the highest figure to be paid for one.

If it was jumped at a memorable event, then yeah, that tends to add some value.  Just launching it off a plywood ramp in your backyard won't do anything for it.

The pool of buyers is limited though.  If Hans Ludke started jumping GLs for a profit then he would run out of big-money buyers pretty fast.
