Front Bumper Guards

Anyone know why some 69 Chargers had short bumper guards and some had Tall ones ?

It was a mid-year change.  

Same with headrests.  The govt made them mandatory instead of optional once the cars were built after January 1st 1969.

The door handle buttons also became chrome metal rather than black plastic partway through the year.

Taller ones were later.  


BTW the taller bumper guards were not a govt mandated thing AFAIK.  That was just the headrests.

I've heard that it was simply a change in manufacturer rather than a safety change. I just bought a set on eBay not too long ago to see what they look like on my '68. I've always liked the looks of them on the '69s

I like when people do things like that, really makes you look close. I've seen a few 68's with 69 grille on them.

I wish I could use the shorties, but alas the tall ones left marks on top of the bumper so that wouldn't look very nice. I like the look of the shorties a lot more than the tall ones.

I like the tall ones better. They're classy looking. One of these days I'm going to make a set of rears to match my replacement front bumper.

I had a 1969 SE car from 1977 to about 1985 drove the hell out of it. I think the tall guards saved the grille center several times parking.

I prefer this version of the Tall Guards:

It looks wrong when somebody hangs a wide pushbar on a GL replica with tall guards in the way.  It locates the pushbar too far down/out.  The TV crew removed all the taller guards in the wide-pushbar era.


I don't like picking on other people's cars but this is pretty common.  Even John Schneider's car had it:
