I was leaving a somewhat local place where cars gather and you can get some food and while I was driving home with the headlights on I hit the dimmer switch and nothing happened, I did this 3 or 4 times and poof, no headlights at all. Uh oh, so I drove on for another min and they popped back on, however I left well enough alone and went home never trying the bright lights again. Right before I pulled in garage I hit the dimmer again and poof, everything working. Do you think it could be the plug into the dimmer switch needs to be pushed back into place or something more sinister?

I had the same thing in my 69 after a long period of inactivity.  Just working on and off - low to high, fixed it.
