727 question

I have a 72 B300 Van and the transmission went out. 318 w/ 727. It only goes in reverse. I have a neighbor who has a 727 from a 86 Dodge truck that I can pretty much have. It was working when it was pulled. Hold me over until I can afford a legit rebuild.  Will that work? Is a 727 a 727 or do I need to find one from the same era as the van? I'm totally green at this and any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the board.

As long as they're both small blocks and the tailhousings are the same they will physically interchange. Things to look out for are lockup/non-lockup converter and 318/360 external balance issues.
