Should never have sanded it... should have stuck it in a bowl of Evaporust.

Another option is you might be able to get a good rubbing off the bottom.

Another good way to clean them with locally available materials is Naval Jelly (available at all hardware stores) and 0000 steel wool. Coat the tag in Naval Jelly, let sit for several minutes, then gently polish the rust away with the steel wool. Re-apply naval jelly often to keep it wet. It will stink and the jelly will go from bright pink to brown. Wash off with soapy water. The Naval Jelly will not eat the remaining paint that is still bonded to the metal.

Sometimes the tag has so much rust even clean you wont be able to read it from the top. The back is almost always clear. Snap a picture on your phone, then flip it in with a photo editor.

The build date is probably "317", or March 17 1968.

The transmission code is most likely "5", or a 727 3-speed automatic.

The engine code is probably "83", a 4-bbl 440.

Besides Navel Jelly you could use Bar Keepers Friend or ZUD. all 3 contain Oxalic Acid. Or you can do what I do & just use 99.9% pure white Crystaline Oxalix Acid & it will work fast & attack any & all rust no matter how heavy & still leave the paint & not eat away at the metal. And much cheaper then Evaporust or any of those other biodegradable user Friendly Cleaners. But Oxalic acid highly toxic. LEON.

Very good info! I didn't know that was what made Naval Jelly work. I use Oxalic Acid to bleach wood. Now I have to try it on metal!

ok guys, cleaned up the tag somewhat now can read it.looks like a really late build date(for a 68) also front fenders are original but look to be 69 fenders with the marker lamp holes covered up and 68 holes punched thoughts  :shruggy:
