Duane's 68

I keep waiting to wake up from this dream.  I have a 68 Charger in my garage!

On March 17th, 2016 I posted an add in the 'wanted' section of the board.  I wanted a car that was either a car owned by someone on the forum or at least could be vouched for as a solid car.  I didn't want to mess with a dealer or an auction.  I didn't want to risk a scammer type situation.  Within 48 hours mpd659 posted a 68 located in South Dakota.  I talked with the owner (Brian) of the car and made the trip to go check it out.  As a sidenote: Dealing with Brian made buying the car of my dreams nothing but an awesome experience.   Mpd659 I owe you a beer for taking the time to post the car in the forum.

So I arrive in South Dakota.  It is a balmy 25 DegF.  There is a bit of moisture on the ground it snowed the night before.  I meet Brian at a garage in town and out comes the 68.  It does not like the cold (no choke ).  I drove it for the first time and was almost speechless the whole drive.  Keep in mind this is the first time behind the wheel of a classic Mopar.  The whole drive I have my dad and Brian telling me to 'open the 4 barrel up' haha.  With the wet pavement, 600 HP, Brian (and his 2 boys) in the back w/o seatbelts, and the not-confidence-inducing feel of manual drum brakes I don't think I got her over 3k RPM.  Owell.  Plenty of time to top that number in the future.

What sold me on this car is that Brian built this car the way I would have done it if I started from a shell.  It is meant to be driven.  If this car was all original I would be terrified to take it out of the garage.  Simply put: this car is exactly what I was looking for.  I could not let it go and deal with another X year search trying to find another one just like it.

A price was agreed on with a pickup date of 4/9/2016.  This was 2 weeks after I went to South Dakota to check the car out.  This was the longest two weeks of my life.  I did not sleep much the last 4 days.

I showed up to pick it up and while there is no snow I think we were in the low 30's again with a nice 20 MPH wind.  The transport back to Omaha was uneventful which is of course what you want.  Before we loaded it up on the trailer Brian did a couple last burnouts that I think are probably still smoking

The 68 is now in my garage.  I have spent more time washing it then driving it

The first minor projects for the summer are fixing a power steering fluid leak and a new latch on the glove box.  I ordered a few new blank keys to get a couple extra sets just in case.  My first larger projects will be disk brakes and installing the A/C.  I am not sure when I will get to those.

I am located in Omaha, NE.  There are a few weekly car shows around town I am looking forward to going to.  I know there are more midwest guys out there so let me know what's going on.  I'd like to get this thing on the road and put some miles on her.

Final picture is next to my bro's 68 GTO.  We haven't figured out who was born first but I am sure they are close.  Ignore the giant leak in front of the GTO that is from the Taurus

In closing I would like to say thanks again to mpd659 and Brian.  I have been on the forum for many years and to now actually have a car is a dream come true.  My plans for this thread are to keep the pics coming from the shows and drives.  I have yet to see anyone on here complain about having too many pics.

Awesome find and purchase!  I looked and looked for a similar '68 R/T back in the mid-'70's and only found one and the owner just would not sell the Charger.

Congrats to you and enjoy the ride !!

Sweet ride!! One of the reasons I love this forum is the support from the Charger community here. I was lucky enough to pry my charger out of Troy's hands so I know how you feel!

Beautiful car you got there, I know how you feel, this weekend was the Two Week Anniversary of me owning my 70, everytime I go out to the garage and see it sitting there it's unreal, like "Wow, I really own this thing".    :2thumbs:
