Windshield Frame Tabs

There are three tabs punched out of the lower windshield frame in my '69 Charger. What purpose do/did they serve? I don't see any mention of them in the FSM regarding windshield installation.

My guess is that they are locating tabs for the bottom of the windshield gasket.  The top and sides of the gasket are held in place by the flanges but the bottom has no way to be held in place so the little tabs were added.  I think if you look at the bottom of a new windshield gasket you'll find slots that will accept those tabs.

Now that I've taken my new windshield gasket out of its package and test fit it, I can see the channel that runs across the bottom to accommodate those tabs. Thanks for the info.

I was just about to ask if the windshield on my '69 had/needed a gasket, when I saw this thread.  It's been 8 years or so since the car got torn apart.  The glass was removed by the body shop so I didn't get to see how any of it came apart.

I've got a kit with all new glass for my car, and I have the windshield trim, still need to buy the back glass trim.

In going through my pile of parts I found what appeared to be a brand new seal for the windshield, but almost everyone I've asked said "oh the glass was just siliconed in on those old cars".

So, I am assuming from this thread, that yes, I need to use the rubber gasket?...  If yes, is there a rubber gasket for the back window too?

My plan is to have someone else (a shop or speedy auto glass etc) professionally install the windshield and back glass, but I wanted to have all the parts and just say "here ya go".

Rear glass is put in with "tape".. front glass is definitely a rubber gasket. Those "tabs" also serve as a water drain into the cowl.

It's pretty important to mock up everything before you install stuff.  Put in the trim clips, and the trim.  Take the trim out and add the window glass etc.  Do everything you can think of before the final installation.  I would ask if the people you ask to install the glass have any experience with old cars, it's a different world than the new cars.

I had been hearing that the windshields and back windows on these cars were "silicone in", but a guy I work with that used to work in the auto glass industry said to avoid silicone like the plague.  He said to use urethane. 

I guess silicone is very acidic and eats away paint and metal when used around car windows...

Just buy the repro front rubber gasket and lock strip and the roll of butyl tape for the rear window. Easy peesy.. don't buy into any other install method.
