Column Shifter

74 charger, automatic on the column.
Normally you would pull the shift lever forward and select the position you want. My lever stays forward and will not go back unless I push it towards the dash but comes right back towards me. The selector indicator is almost against the plastic which has the P-R-N-D-2-1. It started after the car was lifted and the shift seal replaced. I disconnected the linkage from the transmission but does not help. It was operating properly prior to lifting the car. Any thoughts? It's probably something simple.
