Right now I'm feeling sickened by the recent Tennessee shooting of an eight year old girl by an 11 year old boy.  She's dead because she wouldn't let the boy play with her puppy.  Somewhere in that there's an irresponsible gun owner.  I don't think safety lies in arming more eight year olds.  Easy access to firearms is a problem, and no amount of gun lockers or trigger locks can solve this if adults are too stupid, lazy, careless  or unconcerned to use them.  Capital punishment has no value in a case like this and whoever the responsible adults are they cannot be adequately held liable for this.  They cannot make this right for the girl's family.  The second amendment does not guarantee people the right to be stupid, or to avoid using common sense.

el dub

If I was the father of the little girl, I might march over to the boys house and shoot his father. Maybe his mother. Do you think that would get the point across that you are responsible for your kids. They need to make people responsible. But nowadays, wrong is right so that might not work.

Again...we don't need more laws....just enforce the ones we have.....and to back up the old saying " if guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns"
This guy was using fake IDs to buy guns...so a judge gives him probation on a felony so now He can never legally buy a gun...???  :o
and yes i know the part about Obama pardening him is untrue...but that isn't the point here....he was buying guns with fake ids and reselling them...and ...http://m.snopes.com/dontray-mills/

Three armed fun seekers were turned away from a party near Tennessee State University last night, so they opened fire into a crowd of more than 100 people.  Students from TSU, MTSU and Vol State were hit by gunfire.  No word on whether anyone in the crowd returned fire.  No one has died in this incident yet so this might just be another ordinary shooting.

Would like to get the details on the Tennessee shooting.   I have feeling it wasn't the Tri-Delts shooting up the Gamma
Phi's fly-me party.

If I had to bet it, I would say it will end up much closer to a "normal shooting".

With Wikipedia as a source how inaccurate could it be?  We need Fox to do an investigative report.

On another note I read about a six year old that killed his three year old brother with a loaded revolver dad kept secured on top of the refrigerator in Chicago.  Dad was arrested for child endangerment.  The three year old is still dead.  In Salina, KS a responsible gun owner in a movie theater accidentally shot himself.

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

QuoteWe need Fox to do an investigative report

Flipping a coin would be faster.  Heads, it's Obama's fault.  Tails, it's Hillary's fault.

ITSA426

Coin toss would be more likely to be accurate than any Fox report.

Six more shot in a drive by in Calumet City, Illinois.  Funeral goers were gathering at a liquor store following the service.  Apparently a confrontation broke out at the liquor store.  Three critical but nobody's died... yet.  Didn't say for sure who was just exercising their second amendment rights.

Two shot today in Clarksville, TN.

ITSA426

A police officer was shot and killed in East Harlem last night.  A four year old girl died from gunfire as part of a road rage incident in Albuquerque.

el dub

Look at the bright side. How many people haven't been shot today?
entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

It sounds like police have detained a "person of interest" in the road rage killing of the unarmed four year old girl in Alberquque NM.  No word yet on what well regulated militia he belongs to.

el dub, I really appreciate your input, and all the other things you post.  Six people were shot and wounded today in my home community leaving more than one million not shot today.  I'm not opposed to guns at all, and generally support the second amendment, but I really feel America has to find a solution to the gun violence problem.  The NRA offers no solutions.  They are really just a lobbying agency for the weapons industry.

You have got to be kidding me...

Other then you know...

Business Alliance & Clubs
Competitions & Matches
Eddie Eagle program to teach youth about gun safety
Hunter Services to expand our youths hunting knowledge and safety
Law Enforcement training and programs
NRA Gunsmithing Schools
NRA Headquarters Ranges to teach these programs
NRA Instructors who are endorsed by States and even the Brady Team for CCW permit holders
Range Services
Women's Programs to get them a tailored program for their needs....

But NO! the NRA does NOTHING to help the gun "problem."

All they do is pimp the "Weapon Industry." The NRA is doing more than any other organization in the United States by leaps and bounds. Stop getting your news from the Huffington Post, and Comedy central, and get involved.

How bout you join up and help??? Put your money where your mouth is, and become an NRA instructor. Teach our young, and support the NRA's movement for gun safety???? how about opening an Eddy Eagle program in your community? The literature is FREE from the NRA. You do realize that the NRA, and the NRA-ILA are different right?   :shruggy:

And what the heck is this???

"No word yet on what well regulated militia he belongs to."

I bet I can take a real good guess at what this person belongs to. I bet it's not an NRA certified CCW carrying member.

JUNKTRAVELER: all I've seen in this thread is a bunch of bullies and 3 guys that actually give a crap.

redmist

just look at this disgusting NRA Propaganda!!!   :icon_smile_big:

How dare they try to teach our youth about the dangers of guns!  Terrorists!! (as labeled by the Brady Campaign)  :nana:

I hear what you're saying.

But did you feel this way, this strongly, 20 years ago?   There was much more gun violence happening back then.

I'm with ITSA426 on this issue. I wasn't before.  I also don't mind having a daily post of who was shot because it keeps us thinking about it.

QuoteI also don't mind having a daily post of who was shot because it keeps us thinking about it.

Meh.

I don't watch or read daily newsmuch at all anymore.  This is why.  I'm tired of the idea that a daily intake of random negative stuff equals keeping myself informed about the world.  That's most of what daily news is.  There is nothing newsworthy about much of the stuff except that it's negative or threatening in some way.

"Two people were shot early this morning in an apartment building on the 3800 block of Jefferson Avenue"?  Okay.  But the random day-starter could just as easily be "Approximately 7000 students got A's on their mid-term tests given throughout the school district last week."  Neither one is the slightest bit unusual.  Neither one has much direct relevance to the vast majority of viewers.

The first story gets more press.  But I fail to see why it's more important for me to hear that one.  Every.  Single.  Day.  Perpetually.

ITSA426

Didn't George H W Bush resign from the NRA when they started their printed reference our government as "jack booted thugs"?  When I used to receive NRA literature it was all scary stuff about president Nixon, and his henchmen, coming to take my guns.

I felt this strongly more than 40 years ago, after I found myself deer hunting with a bunch of armed drunks.  That doesn't mean I believe all sportsmen are drunks.  It just took away my interest in hunting.  I haven't been to a gun range since April.

I support the second amendment even though most people don't realize that the well regulated militia clause was written when we didn't have a standing army.  Many of our founding fathers opposed a standing army.  The problem is that many people feel that everybody has a unassailable uncompromising constitutional right to possess any firearm and use or carry it anyplace they wish.  It would be nice if people felt that firmly about all of the amendments, like voting rights.  I've not seen one reasonable suggestion from the NRA about limiting handgun access to the mentally ill or others that should not have firearms.  The second amendment, like all the others in our wonderful constitution, is subject to revision but it's a lengthy process.  It's still about money.

There has to be a reasonable debate rather than two entrenched camps doing nothing.  When the second amendment was written there was no sportsmen class of shooters.  Times change and things can be reevaluated.

I don't get my info from the Huffington Post and I don't have cable so no Comedy Central.

el dub

You better get to typing faster there 426. Here is some info from the Brady Report: On average, 31 Americans are murdered with guns every day and 151 are treated for a gun assault in an emergency room. Every day on average, 55 people kill themselves with a firearm, and 46 people are shot or killed in an accident with a gun.
I like what Redmist said about the NRA. How many on this forum belong. I doubt hardly any. People on this forum don't even talk about the superbowl. Or the World Series. Or about any sports. So maybe join the NRA to have some common ground on this shooting business. Cause that is what it is, Big Business all the way around. I blame it all on the lawyers though. Prison is a piece of cake and establishes street cred for criminals. If prison was hell there wouldn't be so much trouble. And I mean hell.
But for some reason they have rights in prison. I do not get that. I would give them rights and lefts all day long if I had any say. And not one of them would want to come back. So there it is in a nutshell. JMO.
PS  Why do you think the pols have done nothing on this. There is a reason.
entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

ITSA426

Pols?  Follow the money.  I hope people on this forum don't talk about a lot of other issues much because it is mostly a Charger forum.  I joined for my interest in the classic Dodges and because I'm probably reliving my youth.  I don't believe all of us joining any one organization would help resolve an issue outside the organization.  I'm aware of the numbers on gun violence.  I hope others can become aware also.  As I said early on in this thread, I don't generally post in these because of inflamed opinions.

Maybe if I post about a four year old girl shot and killed in the back of her daddy's pickup truck by an armed citizen in a road rage incident, redmist, or someone else can offer the things the NRA is doing to stop this from happening or why the NRA remains silent on these things.  I would think they would have an interest in showing firearms in a positive light rather than just trying to get more of them sold.

el dub

The NRA has nothing to do with selling guns. The NRA is the only organization that fights for gun owners rights and fights against politicians. Better join up.
entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Mike DC

The NRA has nothing to do with selling guns?  Um, yeah, and D.C. lobbyists have nothing to do with how congressmen vote.

I agree that the 2nd Amendment was written for conditions radically different than we have now.  Shoulder-fired muskets on the 1780s Appalachian frontier is one thing.  Handguns in modern cities are something else.  On the other hand we had urban conditions in the 1800s and we still kept 6-shot revolvers legal.  The USA has collectively favored firearms staying legal, for better and worse.

But how much gun violence do we have?  The US population is up near 350 million.  If we had 1 new gun murder in America every single day of the year then the chances of it happening to anyone is still around 1 in a million.  I just don't think a few shootings per day is really all that much.

People get killed by cars every day too but we don't beat down Congress's doors demanding that they all be computer-controlled.  We're willing to accept certain risks for certain liberties.
